Windows 10 Builds

Windows 10 Builds

Postby fabianfadeyi » 17.10.2016, 12:58

Hi Everyone,

Very new to WSUS Offline but i love the idea of it. As we all know the windows 10 updates are a bit different to other windows updates and i'm just wondering how WSUS Offline deals with builds.

I'm wondering if the following is possible. If i have a windows 10 machine on build 1507. Will WSUS offline upgrade it build 1511 then upgrade to build 1607 or is this something that has to be done manually and WSUS Offline only deals with the most recent Version of Windows 10.

Cheers for your time.

WSUSOU deals with all possible patch levels. Upgrading Windows Branches cannot be done by WSUSOU itself, for multiple reasons:
- There exist multiple branches, like Current Branch, Current Branch for Business, Insider, Long Term Support Branch 2015 and LTSB 2016 (possibly more). Each of them is different, e. g. LTSB 2015 will not be upgraded to 1511 or 1607, it stays at 1507.
- Some SKUs (Editions) cannot be upgraded without upgrading licenses as well. Those Admins would be very upset, don't you think?
- Such an upgrade is NOT like installing a Service Pack, it is upgrading the complete Operating system (through Windows Setup, like the Windows 8.0 -> 8.1 upgrade). Most of the time, that's an interactive process and not automatic.
- A build upgrade is multiple Gigabytes in size. WSUSOU is meant for patching offline systems. Do you notice the problem with bloated installation media, here?
- possibly more reasons I forgot...

Once a branch is discontinued, WSUSOU will simply remove support for it. You are then responsible for upgrading to a supported branch.

Note: You can download up-to-date Windows 10 installation media from MS, at anytime. So you'll be able to start from a current and supported OS build.
_____
tl;dr: WSUSOU doesn't deal with branch upgrades at all.

Ok cool i wasn't moaning i just needed to know exactly how it worked before trying to implement it.

One more quick question. When i run the tool to find updates for windows 10, will it download the files again or will it just add ones that aren't already there. This is an omportant question because we're on a metered connection.

If you refer to the download part: wsusou will just download new/changed files. Files, which havent't changed since the last download won't be downloaded again.
If you refer to the installation part: this part of wsusou will never download anything.
