Installing hangs early

Installing hangs early

Postby TjShredder » 14.07.2016, 17:54

After starting UpdateInstaller.exe I get a console window which will hang for days on the same place. It is not installing anything. Even normal updates do not work. I have a fresh install of windows 7 into a VMware virtual machine on a Mac. I wanted to get the free upgrade to win 10, but that requires an updated system...

I am lost... New to Windows anyway...

any help is much appreciated...

Commom problem ATM.

Cancel the installation by closing the cmd window. Then install the file manually and reboot. wsusou should now work as expected. I'd love to debug this issue, but I wasn't able to reproduce it in different environments here.

Hello

I am using W7 x64

I have tried installing the updates that have been suggested

The exe installed and the 1st msu file, all the others were already installed

I had been stuck on the Listing ID's for around 5 hours prior to installing the updates

I've been stuck at the same point for about 1 hour 45 minutes since restarting

No AV is installed

Windows Update CPU util sits at 50%

I've had this behaviour with a couple of W7 x64 computers and would like to try to resolve.

Any troubleshooting steps that we can try.

Thanks

VW

The problem is the size & number of supersedences in MS' update catalog.
Not much we can change now, except for installing different updates to reduce them.

@aker
I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean, or perhaps more importantly what I can try to work-around the issue. I gather that I need to download some updates manually, but how do I identify which ones?

Thanks

Downloading and installing KB3161608 did the trick on Win7SP1, for me. YMMV.

I have made some progress.

Here is my experience

wsusoffline update was stuck on listing ID's for 24 hours (CPU util consistently at 50%)

Tried installing KB3161608. CPU util consistently at 50%, after an 1 hour I killed it.

In the meantime found an article that stated that KB3020369 is a pre-req for KB3161608

Tried KB3020369, CPU util consistently at 50%, after 15 - 20 mins stated that KB3020369 already installed

Tried KB3161608 again and immediately offered to install

After restart tried wsusoffline and listing ID's completed in 5 minutes and updates installed.

Same issue here. Only after installing ALL patches mentioned here: http://wu.krelay.de this ´id searching´ was reduced to roughly 10 minutes when it beforehand hang for hours and hours.

But it´s important to emphasize that this problem is one that MS alone is responsible for. They f... up WU and the WU client permanently esp. for Win 7 and Win 8.
It´s really hard work from the wsusoffline crew to clean up the chaos after MS has messed up things...again and again and again. Thanks for this effort !

And, Hey MS, whats wrong with you ? WU has become the most dangerous malware on the net much more than all viruses, trojans and ransomware etc.
You don´t feel any guilt, no apologies, no nothing but moving on troubling people´s lives ?
First i was angry, now i am only sad...

I am a complete novice regarding windows. What exactly does that mean, which file (exact name and path).
I was thinking that opening that Updateinstaller.exe is a manual install...

because it was mentioned, I also downloaded KB3020369 opening this will give me a window saying:
"Suche nach updates auf diesem computer" (german system - looking for updates on this computer) and will sit there and never ever find anything. What is going wrong there???
