Did you check the disk for errors, already?

I'm trying to get myself psyched to do the Repair Install. It seems pretty complicated. And I'm still not sure whether or not I can use the Windows 7 Install CD (one of the two that came with the computer), since it is Windows 7, and not Windows 7 SP1. The instructions are a bit confusing (to me at least) on that issue.

You also mentioned a Simplix Update Pack. I've tried to find more info on that, but the only places that appear to have any detailed info are all in Russian. Do you know where one can get an English language version of the Simplix Update Pack?

You've been very generous and helpful with your advice. I'll certainly understand if you prefer not to dwell on this issue further, since it is at least in part, off the main topic of the WSUS program.

It is recommended to use install media of the same SP level than what's installed.

As for the Simplix pack: Yes, the developer is Russian, but the Simplix pack UI is English. The patches itself of course are global (only very very few patches released for Vista and beyond are language-specific).

Well, then I may be out of luck on the Repair Install. My DVD that came with the computer is just Windows 7 Ultimate, NOT SP 1, since SP 1 was applied after I got the computer. I did see that there are places where you can download an ISO file for Windows 7 SP1, but I sort of assume that if I did that, I'd get hung up on the fact that the Product Key that I have is for the version that came installed on the system, and not for the version that I would be downloading to make the ISO disk. Or maybe the Product Key that's on the label on the system is good for ANY Windows 7 installation on that system. But somehow I doubt that. Do you have any idea of a way around this apparent "catch 22"?

Following that logic, you would have lost your activation when you applied SP1. Your key for the RTM will work on SP1, as long as you install the same Product and SKU/Edition. Product is Windows 7 and the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is Ultimate. So the key for Windows 7 Ultimate will always also work for Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

You should use this site to get your media: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar ... d/windows7
Enter the Product key and it will provide you with the correct media. It will be SP1 since Windows 7 without SP is not supported anymore.

MS license keys aren't as restricted as you think. Since you are on the same hardware it should even activate without requiring a call.*

*Please do a check:
1. Press WIN+R for the Run... window to come up.
2. Enter "slmgr.vbs /dlv" (without the quotes) and press Return.
3. Post ONLY the 'Description' line here, it will contain the license channel you use.
4. If the channel is OEM_SLP you do NOT use the sticker COA key at all.
