Offline updates installer hangs after a short while?

Offline updates installer hangs after a short while?

Postby MrDavo » 02.01.2017, 22:54

Hi All,

I am using the newest version of WSUS Offline updates to create an updates disk for Windows 7 (x64) SP1.

However when using the disk on an HP ProBook 650 G2 (http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=8430739) it starts but quickly gets stuck!

It doesn't matter whether I set the updates installation to 'Automatic reboot and recall' or leave this feature off, thus avoiding the creation of the WOUTemp profile.

Furthermore I can leave 'Update C++ Runtime Libraries', 'Update Microsoft Silverlight', etc. off and the updates installer still hangs after a very short time.

Finally I have followed these best practices (http://www.evernote.com/l/ARZQa_N3Qz1KI6MlR22-usDfKfG3KmGPcEw/) before running the disk.

However even when I follow the best practices the installation disk still hangs.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Did you install KB3172605? If not, you don't have the latest Windows Update Agent. You can check that in C:\Windows\wsusofflineupdate.log, where you can find the version of Windows Update Agent, and whether or not KB3172605 has been installed. Why am I saying this? Your steps include installing the latest Windows Update Agent (good), but your Windows Update link further down links to the old build 320 (bad), so I'm not sure which one you installed.

On the other hand WSUS Offline should install the latest Update Agent, but it only does so successfully when Windows Update is set to "Never check for updates" (which is a setting that's not always successfully set as well).

Just as a hint for reading MS support texts: They now call it Windows Update Client. Should be at 7.6.7601.23453 to fix the long search problem.

Hint for purists: At the MDL forums (forums.mydigitallife.info) one can get packages for 7 or 8.1 that install the latest WUClient without requiring the corresponding full KB. So you can get WUClient on 7 without KB3172605.

Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your interest in my post, and your helpful responses.

I have doubled checked the version of the 'Windows Updates Agent' (or Client), by following these instructions - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/949104

Right clicking on the appropriate dll and selecting the 'Details' tab has revealed that I currently have version 7.6.7601.23453 installed.

Looking at updates that have successfully installed I see the following -

Therefore even though I have the newest version installed, I also appear to have the older version installed as well!

I am not sure if this could cause conflict. However at any rate I was having issues with the offline updates installer before making a conscious effort to follow 'best practices' related to Windows Updates (as outlined in my Evernote link).

Any further suggestions here will be greatly appreciated. Is it possible that a specific product driver could cause conflicts?

Kind Regards,

That doesn't matter. Windows Update is so clever to use the latest version of installed components and patches; that's one thing that reliably works.

At which point does the installation hang? How long did you wait? Is there CPU load with one core on 100%? Any network and/or disk activity?
