Process Hangs for Hours

Process Hangs for Hours

Postby jeanrouge » 03.08.2016, 11:40

I have used the process very successfully in the past but now after running update generator successfully I go to client and run update installer and the following happens (screen shot):

Found Microsoft Windows version: 6.1.7601.17514 (w61 x64 enu sp1)
Found Microsoft Windows Software Licensing Management Tool info...
Name: Windows(R) 7, Professional edition
Description: Windows Operating System - Windows(R) 7, OEM_COA_NSLP channel
Partial Product Key: 9M273
License Status: Licensed
Checking medium content...
Medium build date: 03/08/2016
Medium supports Microsoft Windows (w61 x64 glb).
Disabling screensaver...
Checking Windows Service Pack version...
Checking Windows Installer version...
Checking Windows Script Host version...
Checking Internet Explorer version...
Checking Windows Defender installation state...
Adjusting service 'Windows Update'...
Stopping service 'Windows Update' (wuauserv)...
Waiting for service 'wuauserv' to reach state 'STOPPED' (timeout: 180s)...
Starting service 'Windows Update' (wuauserv)...
Waiting for service 'wuauserv' to reach state 'RUNNING' (timeout: 60s)...
Verifying integrity of Windows Update catalog file...
hashdeep64.exe: Audit passed
10:37:54.07 - Listing ids of missing updates (please be patient, this will take
a while)...

It is now 11:43 and this has been stationary since 10:37
The first time I used this there were 242 updates and it all went through easily
This time it has recorded 213 updates but nothing has moved.

Where should I look to solve the problem please?

Not htat much we can do right now. MS oversided the catalog file causing WU to hang. wsusou already tries to workaround the problem, but it sometimes still takes hours.

Please try to update wsusou (Version 10.7.2) and rerun the download to get the most recent workaround.

@lowerdarkk
Is it correct, that you want to cancel the auto-update?
If yes, please do the following:
- close the cmd-window
- log out from WOUTempAdmin
- log in into your normal user
- run .\client\cmd\CleanupRecall.cmd with administrative rights
- reboot the machine
- if the WOUTempAdmin still exists: delete it using the control panel

Thanks for the posts: I've been away.
My Solution was as follows:
(1) Downloaded an updated version 1071 (I see there is a new version now)
(2) Killed the process by Ctrl+C
(3) Restart the process with cmd update: this worked but then I had another unrelated problem and had to restart from a backup!!!
(3) I then reinstalled a clean copy of 1071 (instead of updating the previous version) in a temporary folder on the Hard Disk - I thought the USB drive might be slowing down the process
(4) It ran correctly although it (a) created a new user which threw me initially and then (b) on each reboot required re-running the process.
(5) After 5 cycles everything now seems in order and yes, I have taken a disk image!

Can you advise how long it's worth waiting before giving up and starting again? This is the second time I've reached exactly the same point as in jeanrouge's message of 03.08.2016 at 12:40 ('- Listing ids of missing updates (please be patient, this will take a while)...'). I left it there for 12 hours yesterday before thinking something must be wrong and starting again. I'm currently up to 4 hours on today's freeze and worried it's never going to happen. As advised I'm using the most recent download (from yesterday) and have turned Windows Updates to 'never', but anything else I should do?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I wish I could do more, but rebooting and trying again is the only thing, I can recommned at the moment. The searching process should take less than 1 hour even on slower systems. You may disconnect the machine from the internet and disable your AV-software (this will most likely decrease the search time).

Exactly the same issue. First time such situation - until this month, everything works without any problem. IMHO it looks like MS try to kill WSUSoffline.

I test it on W7:
* update without WSUSoffline - around 10 minutes
* try to update with WSUSoffline - forever waiting on "Listing ids of missing updates"
