Taking a Long Time ...

Taking a Long Time ...

Getting frustrated...

I'm trying to help a neighbor update her Win 7 PC (32 bit, with SP1).

Win 7 hadn't been updated for about 6 months and when I went on line to Windows Update and didn't seem to make any progress after 4 to 5 hrs... ;-(

I tried a few things from Microsoft including the Update Troubleshooter but it also sat there for over an hr checking for updates online until I gave up and decided to try this WSUS Offline Update ...

I fired the utility up and downloaded the update files (size about 1.16GB) to the Client folder... - everything verified OK...

- then ran the UpdateInstaller.exe and it (running in a cmd window) began it's process which has been running for about 3 hrs now...
ie. Installing ..\w61\glb\Windows6.1-KB3172605-x86.msu...
Lots of disk activity and high CPU usage...

Is this normal to take this long?? [ I know patience is a virtue!! ;-) ]

Would have thought with "only" a 1.16GB update file it would have updated everything in an hr or two - and accessing the files from the hard drive (rather than over the web) would be also pretty quick...

Am NOT dissing the utility - it's a very cool tool - and think if anything it m/b an issue with the PC system or the Win 7 installation...

Thanks and regards,

Glen

It's caused by a bug caused by MS.
Current workaround looks like this:

Please close the cmd window and reboot your computer. Now manually install the file (double-click). REboot again and restart wsusou.
This could be fixed by temporarily setting Windows Update to "Never search for updates".

aker - Vielen dank for your reply and suggestion...

Shortly after I posted my msg I got the idea (from one of the forum posts) that maybe if the MS Windows Update was still running in the backgrnd perhaps it was conflicting with the utility, so I went back and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that Windows had posted ~350 MB of 115 updates -
So I exited out of the utility and went ahead installing the Windows updates...

It took about an hr to process the updates and after a restart there were a few more available so I did those - and now the machine seems to be up to date...

Will try again tomorrow just to be sure...

I presume there is no need to further run the utility at this time...

Your advice greatly appreciated...

I also had this experience of stalling while listing ID's. I had already set Windows Update to never look for updates. In frustration I opened a command prompt with elevated permissions (start orb, type cmd into the run box, right click on cmd.exe in the list and select run as administrator) when the cmd box opened I typed 'net stop wuauserv' (without the quotes) then pressed enter. Once the service was stopped the listing completed and the updates eventually finished.

I used the above method once the service was stopped I restarted WSUS installer and it worked fine...weird :)
