New user confusion

Postby Atanasoff » 24.09.2015, 04:21

I have downloaded, decompressed and run WSUS. At the last step, applying patches to the machine, it fails with the error

"Medium does not support Microsoft Windows (w61 x64 enu)"

Perhaps this is a basic user error: the system uses Windows 7 64 bit, and runs on a standard intel cpu. I did not see any way to specify whether one uses 32 or 64 bit windows, i just used the wsus download link. What did I miss?

You can easily find out, if your target system runs Windows 7 x86 or x64 by opening the Control Panel and clicking on "System". There it says, if you are running an x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit) version of Windows.
For Windows 7 x64 you have to select "Windows 7 x64-glb" in UpdateGenerator.

The system uses W7 Pro 64 bit.
To be clear, do need to download a different file or select a different option when running WSUS? --thx

UpdateGenerator (the part, which downloads all updates) treats Windows 7 x86 and x64 as two different operating systems. Be sure that you checked "x64-glb" in the Windows 7-section of UpdateGenerator when downloading the updates.

Aha! I'd thought that "x64" might refer to a different processor type, such as a server. I'm running it again, checking 'x64 Global' on the Windows tab.
btw, WSUS is a great public service.
