TrustedInstaller.exe screwing up WSUSOffline

Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing some problems with WSUSOffline recently. The problem can be replicated. The installation is as follows:

- Dell Core2Duo PC
- Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit

I install Windows 7, install drivers, Office, 7-Zip and Firefox, (restarting where necessary), then finally run WSUSOffline. At some point during the WSUSOffline process, the updates start to fail. At first I thought this was a bad installation, so I started from scratch, but the problem persists. Looking at Task Manager, TrustedInstaller.exe is taking up 100% CPU (on single core CPUs), or 49% (on dual core CPUs) at the time the updates start to fail. This is reproducible and has affected every installation I have done in the last couple of months.

If I cancel the WSUSOffline process, wait for TrustedInstaller to finish naturally, which can take a couple of hours on slower PCs, I can then restart WSUSOffline and it proceeds as normal.

I do not believe the problem is caused by WSUSOffline, but it does directly affect it. I have Googled for TrustedInstaller 100% CPU and found a number of reports on Microsoft's forums about it, but the advice seems to be that this is a Windows-critical process and should be left alone until it finishes. This might be fine for Microsoft to say but in the real world, it adds up to two hours to the deployment process, which is totally unacceptable and removes the time savings gained from using WSUSOffline.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this? I have attached two pics of the error as it happens, and the log from that update session is below.

Does your system have internet connection during this update installation?
It may be possible some automatic updates are interfering with WOU updates.

The system does have an internet connection, however I don't configure automatic updates until after WSUSOffline has finished. Once it has finished I run Windows Updates and tell it to inform me but not to download. I then install updates and check again until there are no further updates available. Finally I configure it to automatic installation.

Are you suggesting that even though I haven't yet configured WU, it's still checking for updates and therefore messing with WSUSOffline?

I have this issue with Virtual machines. I have noticed that the Trusted Installer is making the CPU using at 100%

Recently I have been updating my Vista Images - by the reverse integration method.
WOU wants to install 561 updates to a base Vista VM. however when I select most of the options such as IE, DOTNET and various other features it fails the way that Antharro describes.

what I have done a quick fix is unselect all options, Expect auto restart, let WOU install and then when it has finished that set, set it going again but this time select the other options such as IE and DOTNET. this way seem to have a higher success rate that letting WOU do all at once.

I think this may have to do wit the amount of updates that need to be installed. I have used WOU on PCs that only require about 6/7 months worth of updates and have been fine.

Interesting. However I wonder if unchecking IE actually increases the workload - in that WSUSOfffline will then install updates for the version of IE installed, then install the latest IE, then all of its security patches, whereas installing IE first will mean only those updates are installed, therefore saving time?

I may try installing IE and dotNet manually next time just to see what happens. In some ways it would be a shame if that does fix it, because it is incredibly convenient to have WSUSOffline install it for me!
