Updating wsusoffline from version 8.5 to 9.3.1 ???

Updating wsusoffline from version 8.5 to 9.3.1 ???

Postby TDPsGM » 01.08.2014, 23:26

I had the wsusoffline directory sitting on my NAS.
The last time I used it was about 1 year ago.

I now have a machine that I want to reinstall windows on and I'd like to use wsusoffline to handle the bulk of the updates.

I have 2 questions.

Question 1:
By transferring the entire wsusoffline directory to C:\ from the NAS,
and running the UpdateGenerator.exe file, will it check to see if there is an updated version of wsusoffline and upgrade THAT before running the updates, or is there something else I have to do?

I looked for the release notes in the unzipped files of version 9.3.1 and I didn't see any, and I read through the faq-enu file and didn't notice anything unusual there.

Question 2:
The last time I used wsusoffline it was on a machine that already had Windows 7 SP1 installed.
This machine is PRE SP1.
As long as I have the Service Packs selected it should still download them and add them to the wsusoffline files for future use, No?
[Edit/Answer]: SP1 was in the repositories. When I ran the UpdateInstaller.exe it looked at the system and saw that it was missing. From what I can tell it doesn't matter what system the UpdateInstaller.exe was last run on. If you move the whole .\wsusoffline\ directory to another machine and run the UpdateInstaller.exe there, it looks at what the current system that ran the UpdateInstaller.exe file from and decides from there what to install or not to install.

Did I get that right? Anyone?

Thanks for the help.

As far as Question 1 is concerned I reviewed this post:

http://forums.wsusoffline.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3845#p11693

that,if I am reading this right, suggest that it should update the versions of WSUSOU when the UpdateGenerator.exe is run.

I just ran it, and I am not sure that I see it being updated.

Am I missing something?
Should I have simply extracted the zipped 9.3.1 version to C:\ and let it overwrite the wsusoffline directory?

Ok, to answer my own Question 1:

Running the UpdateGenerator.exe file does check for a newer version, and asks you if you'd like to download it.
Selecting yes simply drops the latest versions zip file in the .\wsusoffline\ directory with a file that lets you verify the HASH value of it.
It does not actually "UPDATE" to the latest version.

To do that, I had to extract the files to the to the same location the .\wsusoffline\ directory was located - in my case C:\

I simply chose (when asked) to overwrite all files, and we seemed to be good to go.

QUESTION 3:

I know it has been a year since I ran the update, and my understanding of updating to the latest version by allowing the system to "Overwrite" the files was that the "Repositories" that I had should (if they are still valid) have remained in tact.
However, in running the current version of the UpdateGenerator.exe file I have already downloaded more that 1.4GB of data (and it is still going!).
Does this seem right, or did I wipe out my repositories when I upgraded to the latest version?

Thanks for the help.

Lots of new updates were released in this year, this may include some office servicepacks, Win8x Updatepacks, new Dotnet.
If you include Antivirurus definition files these are ~200 MiB alone.

Thanks for the heads up Denniss.

Yep - it took almost 7 hours and over 3 GB's (I don't have the best internet connection) to get it all updated.
I only had Office 2007 & 2010 selected;
Win7 and all the dotnet selected;
and MSSE.

the overall wsusoffline directory went from about 6GB to 7GB in size in the end.

As far as doing the upgrade from 8.5 to 9.3.1 ---- did I do that correctly?

wsusou updates itself, if you didn't disable it using "checkouversion=Disabled".
To check your version, just take a look at .\log\download.log. The first line of every part (seperated by "-"'s) reports its version. If its says 9.3.1, you're using 9.3.1.
