Updating a Win 8.1 laptop

Updating a Win 8.1 laptop

Postby computamedic » 08.05.2014, 22:21

I have been running WSUS for a while on a range of hardware and OS'es but I have an HP laptop at the moment which refuses to run the UpdateInstaller.

It's a fresh install of Windows 8.1 (inc Update 1) but when I attempt to run UpdateInstaller from a network share (where it has successfully run on other machines) it always returns an error "The parameter is incorrect".

It's a 64-bit Windows 8.1 and the WSUS is the latest 9.2.1 updated and run only minutes before.

Has anyone any idea why this error occurs and, better still, what I can do to overcome it?

Regards

Dave

Please post a screenshot of the error message.

Is your network share mounted as network drive?
Please try it from a local HDD.

Thanks for the response. I normally have run the Client Update with the network share NOT assigned to a drive letter although in this instance I have tried both with and without - with the same result.

I even deleted the entire WSUS installation this morning and re-installed it all - and still the same happens. I have run the new installation on both a regular Windows 7 Pro system and the same thing running on an iMac under Parallels 9, both without problems but the Windows 8.1 machine refuses to run with the error message reproduced below.

As quick follow-up. I installed WSUS on an external USB hard drive - and it runs fine on the 8.1 system. The original installation that would not run on 8.1 was on a Synology NAS. Strange that Windows 7 & XP seem quite happy to run from the NAS.

You need to mount the network path as a network drive using "net use" in an administrative cmd, if you want to use wsusou from a network drive.
