I have a nLite'd XP.
When I use Windows Update, it kindly realizes that I am missing some components of the original operating system and doesn't install them.

Will UpdateInstaller.exe skip copying over (updating) hotfix files that don't exist on the hard drive?

Are you sure that the (nLited-) XP satisfies the requirements of UpdateInstaller.exe?

Q: On installation of patches I'm getting strange errors in the command line window, e. g. "C:\wsusupdate\client\cmd\DetermineSystemProperties.vbs(92, 3) (null): 0x80041014". Then the script terminates. What is the cause and how can I solve this problem?

I am not sure if my nLited OS satisfies the requirements of UpdateInstaller.exe
I was hoping that this question had been addressed before I started possibly putting back parts that I don't want with UpdateInstaller.

why not taking the nlited XP and testing

if wsusoffline doesn't run before but run after this, your nlited XP doesn't fit the requirements.
if you want to test without side-effects try with a clean virtual machine.

But if it throws an error, it could be caused by nLite.

wsusou will install all security updates update as Windows Update. If Windows Update doesn't list KB???????? then wsusou won't install it, too (except you define it as a static definition).

note: "version 0.0.0.0" applications are those that are missing from my OS
UpdateInstaller.exe installed kb942288-v3 which is Windows Installer 4.5
UpdateInstaller.exe also tried to install kb2686509 but Windows Update tried and failed as well

So far nothing was installed that I didn't want except maybe Windows Installer 4.5 but that is probably a requirement of UpdateInstaller.

The Prefetch\MSPAINT.EXE is a screen shot I took because I didn't see the UpdateInstaller log file at that time.
The system32\dllcache\msi.dll etc. is probably Windows Installer 4.5 files.

That might be caused by nLite. Maybe you removed one of two/three/... component, which is updated by KB2686509.
It is very difficult to update a nLited version of Windows XP.
What happens, if you try to install that update manually?

Absolutely possible. And so another issue for me.
But the main point about this adventure is that UpdateInstaller.exe only tried to add kb942288-v3.

That is good for users who are interested in offline updating and carry an nLited OS.
