Does 1809 (Server 2019) Work For All Windows 1809 Machines?

Does 1809 (Server 2019) Work For All Windows 1809 Machines?

Postby jonlosada » 10.07.2020, 14:39

Hello,

I recently downloaded the newest WSUS V.12 package. When I began the UpdateGenerator I began to check the items that I needed.

However, I came across a check box in the Windows 10 x64 area that says "1809 (Server 2019). Now I am asking about this because the Windows machine I need to update is on LTSC Enterprise 1809, it is not Windows Server 2019.

Can I still use this 1809 checkbox for updates being that my Windows LTSC machine is on 1809 or is this checkbox only exclusive for Windows Server 2019 machines that are on 1809.

Thanks!

IMO this checkbox's label is a little misleading. It should be "1809 / Server 2019", meaning that it applies to both client and server systems. This can also be seen in the Windows10Versions.ini file that is created by UpdateGenerator which just says (e.g.)
Code: Select all
1809_x86=Disabled
1809_x64=Enabled

General rule of thumb:

+ If the 1809 branch you are using is still supported, the Server x64 and Client x64 updates are the same. There are no Server x86 updates as there is no Server 32bit. All branches of 1809 (rs5, rs5 LTSC, Server 2019 LTSC, Server Core 1809) are still supported.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... fact-sheet

In fact, even support for the non-LTSC 1809 branches (rs5 and Server Core 1809), normally due in May 2020, has been extended to November 2020, in response to the public health situation.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecy ... cing-dates

- Once support for the non-LTSC branches runs out, MS will usually block further updates for them, so they will work on LTSC and Server LTSC only (LTSC and Server LTSC have the same EOL).

Summary: Support for your Windows 10 2019 Enterprise LTSC will run out on January 10th, 2029. Until then, the updates will keep working. New LTSC branches are released every three years, so, you very probably won't be using 1809 anymore, by then.

Okay that makes sense, thanks for the help as well as the detailed response.

I am currently using the installer that I generated while downloading the V.12 I mentioned above, however, I noticed that in the "Updating" section there does not appear an a checkbox for "Install Microsoft Security Essentials" like it used to?

Is it automatically included now, as in it installs it by default? Or did I miss something in the update generator? I made sure I checked "Include Windows Defender definitions" in the updater.

My updater had the following checked: 1809 (Win10 x64), Include C++ Runtime, Include Windows Defender definitions

My installer had the following check boxes available for me to select: Update C++ Runtime, Install .NET FW 3.5, Install .NET FW 4.8, Update Root Certificates and Install Management Framework 5.1 (this one was grayed out so I couldn't check it but it was there in the GUI)

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

What was called Security Essentials became Windows Defender in Windows 8 (IIRC), probably with more features and deeper integrated into the OS.

I guess the Windows Defender definitions are installed automatically, even if they can't be (un)checked in UpdateInstaller; if they have been downloaded, they're available for installation. However, since I've never used Defender nor the download of its definitions, I don't have any practical experience in that regard.

The moniker "Security Essentials" was only used for Windows 7, which 12.0 has no support for. Defender is now a part of Windows 8 and 10, and does not need to be downloaded and installed separately. Likewise, the definition updates (now called "Security Intelligence") should be included in OS updates, like for every other system component.

Understood, so essentially the defender/security updates are now included in the O.S updates being that now defender is integrated in Win10/Win8.

So once I update my offline machine using the checkbox items I listed above I should be okay in terms of defender and security updates right?

So that you do not have to scroll up, these were the checkbox items I selected in my updater:

My updater had the following checked: 1809 (Win10 x64), Include C++ Runtime, Include Windows Defender definitions
