Incorrect # of Updates Installed between WOU versions

Postby Raegar » 11.12.2019, 05:00

Hi,

I'd like to preface this post with my appreciation for this software. Truly a great application, thank you!!!

I have been working with both version of WOU (9.x and 11.x). I've made some excellent progress in understanding how it works, and also utilizing custom files for static and excluded updates. I've also created an entirely new custom batch script that is called, to handle some fringe scenarios that WOU currently does not, an example: Installation of Word, Excel and PowerPoint Viewers from 2003/2007 + their respective service packs and/or updates -- a combination of which will be executed depending on what is already installed.

But this is not what I'm requesting help with. A few months ago, I used v9.2.5 to download wxp media and saved it. Very recently, I used v9.2.6 to download the same wxp media, so now I have 2 different copies. I've created a VM with a clean install of Windows XP with SP3 and no other updates, to perform the test below. Besides the usual installations like IE8, RootCerts, DirectX, WMP11, and .NET Frameworks:
- When I use the media built with v9.2.5, there are approximately 160-170 additional updates that are installed
- When I use the media built with v9.2.6, there are only 26 additional updates that are installed (see below)

Please read the post by the WOU Admin. The old XP WUA cannot deal with the new MS catalog, anymore. Thus, Windows XP is unable to determine missing updates. WOU is useless for XP, now. That's exactly the reason why the ESR has been abandoned for good.

If you have an old ISO with a still working catalog somewhere, keep it!

That clears up a lot of confusion on my part, and will save me time trying to further troubleshoot something that clearly cannot.

Is this a matter of just using the older wsusscn2 file (from my previous media) onto the new media, or is it not as simple as that? Either way, it's mostly for my own knowledge. I happen to have been lucky in that I kept versions of the media...meaning I do have a good working version which I'll convert into an ISO and save.

Thanks again!

If you, or anyone else, needs an older catalog file, just contact me. I've "collected" almost all of them since October 2015. Here's a list of all files I have:

Note: The size uses German thousands separators (dots instead of commas).

But keep in mind that the catalog is only one part of the equation. If MS removed some downloads or changed the URLs, you're out of luck.

I think, I‘ve got an wxp-glb ISO of wsusou 9.2.1 somewhere here (created 04-2014).
Will share, if interested.

[edit]
One correction: it has been created 2016, but with a catalog from 2014
Does anyone know, how to share a 17GB ISO file?

Split it in 1000 MiB parts and upload it somewhere, e.g. filehorst.de (or one of the usual one-click hosters).

For what its worth to anyone that comes reading this thread in the future, I did a quick test today with the following results:

* Downloaded a fresh copy of Windows XP media, using v9.2.6 - ran on a Windows 10 computer
* Replaced/overwrote the wsusscn2 file with a previous version (in my case the file was: ~603MB and was downloaded approximately on September 10/11th)
* Ran the Installer and verified that all ~172 updates (dynamic + some statics I've defined) were successfully installed, and there were no errors in the logs
* Ran the Windows Updates afterwards to verify that no unknown remaining updates were available for download/install - all good!

PS: Thanks to all of you guys for your help and offering, what appear to be critical files for Windows XP - though I do agree we should all move on and past XP :D :D

Be warned: WU doesn‘t work for XP anymore (or at least not the way it should).
An unpatched XP SP3 just gets a hand full of updates from WU, while a slipstreamed media (created around 2014) contains > 200. The result WU shows might not be corrent.

If you‘re interested I‘d share my wsusou XP-ISO with you.

Would be great, however, there's the language problem. What language is the ISO made of? Personally, I'm using en-US only, as many things still available in the net are only for that language.
