Downloading does not update to a new catalog

Downloading does not update to a new catalog

Postby mirror176 » 10.10.2019, 12:08

Running to get win 7, 8.1, and 10 x86+x64 updates downloaded (other settings default) I find future runs on that version and updated versions continue with the same catalog. I ran a fresh extract of 11.8.1 with aria downloader enabled lead to having a catalog from 10/9 with a download on 10/10 on a fresh extract while running a previous copy with catalog 9/10 downloaded on 10/10 does not update the catalog even though I 'thought' it downloads it. Do I need to take a separate step to get the new catalog to download? I had 2018/12/11 catalog last downloaded 2019/09/16 giving a 22.6GB download instead of the most recent 28.1GB and figured something was wrong as it had been through autoupdated versions of wsusoffline yet continued to see no updates to install on win10 v1903 systems.
I normally configure with aria downloader, minimize while running, and remove custom+german language and office2010 support (not sure if any of these have a noticeable change in what is downloaded for me) then run updategenerator.exe to download updates. Tried to leave out options to make sure they weren't the source of interference.

It's completely normal that it takes some time for Microsoft to provide the new Update Catalog file on all servers world-wide. There's nothing any user can do about it, except wait for them to do so.

Apart from that: It's always a good idea to wait a couple of days, to allow Microsoft to get their things together.

Rerunning an update on 9/16/2019 still left wsusoffline with a catalog of 2018/12/11 while unzipping a fresh copy would use a recent catalog. Lead to a completely different offline install experience. I still have a copy of the older around if you want me to rerun it to confirm it still keeps at the 2018/12/11 catalog but testing clean extracts of 11.8.1 (as the old archive was upgraded to this over time) show that the catalog is acquired on first run with future runs still listing the same first run catalog on completion.

Did you actually check the date of the catalog file wsusoffline\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab? Did you try and delete wsusoffline\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab (and wsusoffline\client\md\hashes-wsus.txt) and running UpdateGenerator again afterwards?

Seems to be related to activating aria2c. Moved .\cmd\custom\SetAria2EnvVars.cmd aside and a couple different test copies now function from both a newer extract+download and the one I had saved from over a year ago after rerun when a run just before fails.
During execution I see the following nonlogged output:
Code: Select all
Verifying digital file signature of Windows Update catalog file...
Warning: Deleted unsigned file: "~~~client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab".
<date and time> - Warning: Deleted unsigned file: "~~~>>..log\download.log
Creating database for Windows Update catalog file.

Posting from another computer not in front of the onscreen output so didn't copy date+time and full path I substituted with ~~~ though it only listed part of it on the download.log line (and that file doesn't get deleted). Did notice there is a space in one of the folder names in the path but after replacing that with a letter it still fails.
Forgot to mention that neither warning is listed when aria2 is not activated and this is all ran from within Win10 Pro x64 v1903.

I always thought, that using 10 simultaneous connections for the same file and the same server, and a very small fragment size is a bad idea for a content delivery network, which may have different versions of the same file at the same time.

I think, aria2 is a reliable downloader in its default configuration: Then it uses five simultaneous connections, but only for different files. It won't use a fragmented download of the same file.

Enabling such options may have some potential to mess things up.

If that was the reason, shouldn't I have trouble on first download? Never presented an issue that I saw for first run but always if trying to update.

Usually, a messed-up catalog (with a messed-up checksum) has a messed-up application signature. It is then removed by WOU and the backup of the older catalog is used. I think that's what is happening for you: The new catalog is downloaded corrupted, deleted after failing SIGCHECK, and the previous one restored (old WOU versions did not make a backup and stopped at this point).

Well, if that is the problem, it will be mentioned in wsusoffline\log\download.log, which says that the backup of the catalog file has been restored. It's really easy to check. Also, it's simple enough to disable simultaneous connections used by Aria2 (remove the -s10 option from SetAria2EnvVars.cmd, or even better set it to -s1 to force it to use only a single connection), to see if that makes any difference.
