Windows 10 update problem

Windows 10 update problem

Postby tuxugo » 13.01.2019, 11:25

I run wsusoffline/client/UpdateInstaller.exe
and it reports:
Listing update files...
Warning: Update kb2538243 (id: 729a0dcb-df9e-4d02-b603-ed1aee074428) not found.
Warning: Update kb2993928 (id: f6c4261c-9fae-442c-9bfc-7b37ba42f806) not found.
Warning: Update kb4462937 (id: b6dd04cb-e746-4a04-83d4-4b761c784f00) not found.
Warning: Update kb4477029 (id: 06ac9fa5-7fee-4c8c-94d7-c1ef19d6a477) not found.

and it does not install any updates.
Any ideas?

When did you run UpdateGenerator the last time, or what's the medium's build date? Which release of Windows 10 do you use exactly?

Patchday was 08/01/2019. You need to re-run the download for catching the new updates.

I re-run the download and re-run the client updater - it does not remove the warnings :

Listing update files...
Warning: Update kb2538243 (id: 729a0dcb-df9e-4d02-b603-ed1aee074428) not found.
Warning: Update kb2993928 (id: f6c4261c-9fae-442c-9bfc-7b37ba42f806) not found.
Warning: Update kb4462937 (id: b6dd04cb-e746-4a04-83d4-4b761c784f00) not found.
Warning: Update kb4477029 (id: 06ac9fa5-7fee-4c8c-94d7-c1ef19d6a477) not found.
Info: Skipping update kb890830 (Malicious Software Removal Tool) due to matching black list entry.

Any missing update was either black listed or not found. Nothing to do!

KB4462937 is on WOU's blacklist (wsusoffline\exclude\ExcludeList-superseded.txt), although I don't know if this also includes the updates for the specific release 1703. I'm sure there's a reason why this update is on this list. My guess is that it's superseded (by a newer update), hence it's not downloaded, but it's not on the exclude list for installation, so the warning appears. Unfortunately I don't know why it is this way.

The same applies to KB4477029 (Adobe Flash player update November 2018); superseded, so not downloaded.

KB2992928 is an update for ASP.NET MVC (whatever that is). And KB2538243 is an update for Visual C++ runtime 2008, so you should be able to get rid of the warning by enabling updates for Visual C++ in UpdateInstaller.

Windows 10 1703 (aka 15063.0) is EOL since 2018-10.
The newer updates (> 2018-10) are not supported on non-Enterprise editions. So I would say, wsusou downloaded the Enterprise-only updates, but WUA reported the 2018-10 ones.

Please consider upgrading Windows 10 to a more recent version (e.g. 1803 (aka 17134.1) or 1809 (aka 17763.107)) using MediaCreationTool.

Thanks for all the responses.
It seems the main problem is that Windows 10 1703 is "old" and unsupported, so I should reinstall Windows first, and the update warnings should disappear.

The question is: How did you manage to evade the update facilitators? Without a lot of work disabling these (or a seriously broken Windows), you should be already on the later versions.

Unless, of course, you have older hardware no longer supported. Then, the later versions will not install and/or work correctly.

I disable Windows Updates by
1. Disabling the Windows Update service, and
2. Using a firewall (Comodo Firewall) which lets me control which programs "phone home".
Then I can decide to update Windows when I want to, and not have Windows Update download gigabytes of data when I'm trying to play a game.
