KB3135445 - Prerequisite Windows Update

KB3135445 - Prerequisite Windows Update

Postby ahorrill » 12.10.2016, 08:45

Hello

It would be possible to include the update KB3135445 for Windows 7 and Windows Serve 2008 R2 as a prerequisite of windows update. This update in machines with less than 4 GB RAM resolve the problem of the long time of search updates and the process updateinstaller is at 100% during the search of updates.

Thanks

That's the outdated WU Client from Feb 2016. WSUSOU already installs the newer one from July.

Yup. The now outdated Mar 2016 KB3138612 WU client update also supersedes/replaces KB3135445.

I wanted to tell Dalai (hope he sees this message) that new Intel BT drivers are available from Intel's web site (since August 9, 2016) that are fully compatible with the KB3172605 update rollup for Win7 SP1. Win7 users with Intel bluetooth devices must install/update to the newest drivers & software before installing KB3172605.

@epguy9:
Thanks. Since this issue and the solution is also being disussed over at AskWoody, I've added a note and some links to my site. Still, I don't know if it helps in every case, with every hardware. Users of such hardware may have to try different solutions, drivers and so on. Not much I can do about it...

Hi Dalai just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work. I stumbled upon your krelay page after spending several weeks fixing Vista's update. Your solution page was exactly what I was looking for. After I followed your instructions I finally got my system back up and running. I tried your latest October suggestions and I was able to update no problem. I hope you reconsider and continue identifying these key updates at least up until April. Thanks again

Hi,

You're welcome.

I hope you reconsider and continue identifying these key updates at least up until April.

Since I've got messages from people panicking I wouldn't continue to update my site, I've added a note now that (hopefully) resolves the misunderstanding. For the record: I will continue to update the site every month, but for Vista I can only make shots in the dark, nothing more. I just don't have the time to do the whole thing I've been doing for Win7 so far; I don't have any Vista machine, not even a Vista setup DVD.

But I'm quite sure that there will be information about the speedup patch elsewhere every month; maybe in this forum, maybe in other forums, maybe the Security Bulletin Summaries can help you (I added this link to my site, too).

But now, we're completey off-topic .

hi again Dalai.

It's now April 2017 and by the time Microsoft issues its last batch of updates for Vista on 4/11, maybe on your web site you should encourage Vista users to upgrade to newer versions of Windows since the long WU scan problems will continue and won't be issuing a new WU client fix for Vista (which was the more long-term solution with Win7 SP1 & Win8.1; patch the WU agent/client app directly). there's no point in continuing usage of Vista beyond this April 2017.

Getting back to the original topic, the KB3172605 update was re-released in Sept. 2016 which replaces the original KB3172605 update as well as replacing KB3161608 though it did not completely replace KB3138612 (but does replace KB3135445)

I could, but I don't think that's necessary. Anyone using Vista should know that it's EOL by now. The EOL April 2017 has been on my site for quite some time, and my site isn't the only one mentioning this. I don't think that anyone - whether or not they're aware of the EOL - would upgrade to a newer Windows (or a different OS) because of anything I write on my site.

However, I'm going to remove anything Vista related on the next Patch Tuesday, but perhaps I could make the EOL of Vista a little more prominent.

[...] since the long WU scan problems will continue [...]

You sure about this? I mean, the issue comes back when new updates are released (and the update catalog changes), and since there won't be any new updates for Vista... IMO It's even easier: just disable Windows Update, because there won't be anything new to install - except maybe Windows Defender (MSSE), which uses the Windows Update Agent AFAIK.

Well I just want to say 'Thank you' for the great page http://wu.krelay.de/en/.

I've spent quite some time trying to figure out all the reasons why 'Win Vista' stopped updating a friend's machine sometimes around Jun 2016 (while trying to fix it). Clearly the cheapest option would likely be to buy Win10 and upgrade the whole thing - but it would not give the same joy :).

So after trying numerous pointless hack for dropping SoftwareDistribution dir, reregistering almost all dll in Windows and even way more crazy things - none of them obviously worked in my case. Then found the page describing 'real thing' and suggesting to preinstall
KB4015195 and KB4015380 - well still not good (or at least I was still unhappy with wait time). But then I've added also KB3183431 and magic happened.
The whole thing started to upgrade after around 2 hours.

So perfect :) couple days on this research has passed - but I've learned quite a few nice Windows tricks (being Linux user only myself ;)) so big thank to Dalai (and please if you do not find it to ackwared - keep the info searchable for unhappy Vista users - it still works for some people... - just mention there the 3rd. patch for Vista)

KB3183431 is listed on the page for October 2016. The important thing to know is that the table for Vista does only list updates for the current month, not all required prerequisite updates, because it's just guessing from my side for Vista since October 2016. To get all prerequisite numbers you could click through the months and write them down - which is tedious, I admit - or go to VistaX64 forum (also linked on my site) and get the full list from there.
