entry point not found - errors during generation

entry point not found - errors during generation

Postby tns1 » 06.04.2016, 23:17

WSUS 10.6.1

At every point in the download where I see:
Verifying digital file signatures of some stuff...

An error dialog pops up:
sigcheck.exe - entry point not found
The procedure entry point SetFileInformationByHandle could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

I am required to hit OK to proceed. This happens several times. The log contains a few warnings such as:
Warning: Integrity database ..\client\md\hashes-dotnet.txt not found

Is this a bug to be fixed? Can I trust that the downloaded updates are complete and valid?

Sounds like some kind of problem with Windows (maybe a damaged kernel32.dll [?]).

Which version of Windows are you using for downloading the updates?
Any modifications applied to it?

You may try running
Code: Select all
sfc /scannow

in an administrative cmd.

This is an XPsp3 box being used to gather win7 updates via wsusol.
sfc /scannow reports no issues and I still get the same errors. Are there known viruses that defeat sfc by modifying the system file repositories?
I also recently did multiple virus scans - all clean.

The case is very simple: Sigcheck 2.5 doesn't run on XP, anymore. It requires at least Vista.

I still have a copy of 2.20, that seems to run fine. The ZIP is not the original ZIP since it is from the SysinternalsSuite monster-sized ZIP.

You could also browse the Wayback Machine at archive.org for old versions. The version 2.2 can be found here, although the archived web site mentions version 2.1:

I tested 2.20, 2.40 and 2.50.

2.20 works in XP, 2.40 and 2.50 don't. Could someone find or check 2.30?

Despite the lack of sigcheck during the generation phase, it seems to have downloaded all the updates.
I have run the install phase on Win7, and it looks to be rechecking those files as it installs. If so, its a minor annoyance.

At installation wsusou just compares the checksums of the files with its integrity database, it does not check the signatures anymore (as thats done already).

After trying to run WSUS Offline Update v10.6.2 on XP SP3 I ran into this same issue. I came upon this thread while searching for an answer.

I got curious and decided to track down the Wayback Machine's copies of the descriptions for Sigcheck v2.20 (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20150919172023/https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897441.aspx) and v2.30 (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20151224222935/https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897441.aspx). Both still state compatibility for Windows XP/Server 2003, however the closest Archive match for v2.40 (v2.42) (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20160122000055/https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897441.aspx) only states Vista/Server 2008 or higher.
Unfortunately the latest Archive match for Sigcheck is v2.20 (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20150907225438/http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Sigcheck.zip).

However, I did manage to find a copy of Sigcheck v2.30.

After a bit of searching I found out that v1.1.1 of Skwire Empire's SigcheckGUI (http://skwire.dcmembers.com/fp/?page=sigcheckgui) contained a copy of Sigcheck v2.30. While currently available online, I made sure to save a copy of it to the Wayback Machine just in case (http://wayback.archive.org/web/20160618051340/http://skwire.dcmembers.com/apps/sigcheckgui/SigcheckGUI.zip).

Just extract 'sigcheck.exe' from the archive and place it in the 'bin' folder of your WSUS Offline installation.

FYI, The v2.3 mentioned in the above post found at skywire fails a Virus total test.

Boco's post of 2.2 from tinyupload does not contain the file any longer.

hbuhrmester's post directing to web.archive will still redirect to a link, and yes it does show on the page you would get 2.1. During download windows shows that it fails. But a zip application does download and after extracting it shows as 2.2.

lameboyadvance's link for 2.3 at web.archive currently works but the skywire downloads a zip file wont pass a virus total test.
