Updates visible in Windows Update History?

dism will only work on Windows NT 6.x Kernel (Vista and higher) and isn't able to install ".exe"-updates. It is just a tool for installing cab- and msu-files.
I tested dism 6.1.7601.xxxxx on Windows 7 and Vista to find a way to install an update offline last year. It worked for both, but I did not check, if it registers the update in the Windows Update history.

I just did a fresh install yesterday.
Before I started, there were only 4 items showing in the update history.

I ran UpdateGenerator.exe
then
UpdateInstaller.exe

I looked in "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history" and it was still the same 4 items that were there.

How do I get them to show up there?
How do I KNOW that they were actually installed - am I supposed to go look in the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log?
Does Windows KNOW that they have been installed?

If they are NOT listed in the "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history" will windows try to re-download everything that wsusoffline supposedly installed for me?

It is a little disconcerting not seeing the updates wsusoffline installed listed in Windows View update history but then again I am new to wsusoffline and I am still learning.

Please advise, and thanks for the help!

No Windows Update won't install the updates a second time, because the updates are installed as "packages" (you are able to see them at "Control Panel -> Software -> Installed Programs and Features -> Installed Updates"; I just have a German version of Windows, so the names could differ a little bit).

A proof for this is, that wsusou uses the same mechanism as Windows Update to determine the missing updates.

Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history
and
Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Installed Updates show 2 different things?!

Frankly I've never navigated to the second path before and didn't know about it. I just always looked at the 'View Update History'.

I just checked on the system I used it on and they are indeed different!
Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Installed Updates shows the files that wsusoffline installs.

It sounds like the update history is simply what Windows has updated itself.

Thank you very much for the help!

I think, you are right. All updates installed using Windows Update (wusa.exe, Windows Update at control panel, automatic update) are listed. Those installed as packages (PkgMgr) are not listed; just at installed updates.

Thanks for all of that clarification. It looks like these updates are listed, so I am not concerned any more. Great!

Hi!

First of all: I totally misunderstood the problem described in this thread and in its predecessor: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3663.
Since I always looked at "Installed Updates" but not at "View update history", I never saw the discrepancy between them, so now I say: Sorry and thanks for clarification!

As I tested yesterday, neither Dism.exe nor PkgMgr.exe will fill the history.
Anyway, I'll switch to Dism.exe (if present) because it takes .cab files directly, without the need to unpack them before.

Unfortunately I didn't find any Microsoft article explaining the difference between "Installed Updates" and "Update history", but I found opinions sustaining the idea that "Update history" logs (basically failed) attempts, where "Installed Updates" shows the real system state, so regarding our needs, "Installed Updates" should be seen as the reference, so we have a "no-prob". :)

Thanks again & kind regards

Is it possible that lack of updating this database consistently
causes Windows Update to "find" some items as missing
& attempt re-installation? I think I am seeing this sometimes.
Can't prove it.
