kb3083186 download failed

Postby ilander » 17.08.2015, 23:09

Hi,

I've just tried the latest 9.8 version for Windows 7 x64 updates with all optionnal downloads activated. After a first run, i had a warning in the log file:
Code: Select all
Warning: Download of http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2015/08/ndp46-kb3083186-x64_5dbb2ef7c8ed3061e6c5ab58c3df15b8f78fd73c.exe failed
related to DotNet.
But when i tried to paste the URL in IE, it downloaded correctly.
So i've re-run WSUSOffline again, keeping client folder untouched, and this second run had no more warning.

Just to be sure, i have created a new empty folder and run a new instance of WSUSoffine. At the end, i had 2 warnings, the first one for EXACTLY THE SAME KB3083186, plus a second one. I've compared the content of the 2 different client folders and found a missing file in the latest in win61/glb. I've rerun it again, and at the end no more warning, plus the missing file was here in win61/glb. No more difference between the 2 instances.

But at the end, it seems that WSUSOffline tool can't never download KB3083186 at first run (despite i can manually download it), and then never try it again. So i believe that a little something wrong here...

What do you think?

Thanks for your great job!

Hello ilander,
failed downloads are normalpy caused by a dropping internet connection. This could be fixed by just trying again (as you did).
I wouldn't say, that wsusou always fails to download that update on the first attempt, I just think that the connection is closed by MS' servers/your internet provider/some server between them after a certain amount of time, which is reached when wsusou tries to download this specific update. But wget (wsusou's downloading engine) detects this when trying to download the next update. Could you please look for a line "Deleted unsigned file xxx..." in your log (where "xxx" is a placeholder for a filename). This would support my theory of a partially downloaded file. (Just works, ic verification is enabled).

It also seems, that the nameserver resolution sometimes fails on the first attempt. This could be the case in:

windows 7 kb2604114 failes to download
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5088

I don't know, why the error message was inserted further down in the logfile, but the timestamp:

Code: Select all
wget: unable to resolve host address `download.windowsupdate.com'
    07/08/2015 10:20:40.49 - Warning: Download of http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/secu/2012/04/windows6.1-kb2604114-x64_d1fd3debcb8dd2da164c45f689a1c0e449c38159.cab failed

suggests, that this was actually the first URL, which was tried.

Here is a simple test to try: Open a command prompt window and change to the folder wsusoffline\bin. This is the folder, where wget is stored. This run this command (on a single line):

Code: Select all
wget --spider --no-verbose http://download.wsusoffline.net http://download.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com http://www.download.windowsupdate.com

The output should be:

Code: Select all
2015-08-18 13:38:30 URL: http://download.wsusoffline.net/ 200 OK
2015-08-18 13:38:30 URL: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads 200 OK
2015-08-18 13:38:30 URL: http://download.windowsupdate.com/ 200 OK
2015-08-18 13:38:30 URL: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/ 200 OK

If you get a different result, repeat the test, until everything is OK. Then try to get the missing updates.
