Errors 1168 and 14098 - what to do?

Hi everyone - This is my first post but I think I've done my homework. I'm trying to update my Dad's Windows 7, Lenovo all-in-one, because it has a failing monitor and I need to install a usb-to-vga convertor to use a second monitor. The driver for this stubbornly refuses to install until I update the system. So... a week or so later.. here I am.
I tried manual installs (after the Windows Updater wouldn't work, of course) and got multiple failures on KB3172605. Just wouldn't go in no matter what I did.
I installed wsusoffline108 and, after a few aborted attempts, I let it just run overnight and woke up to success (well - not really).
I got a fail - 1168 on KB3004375 and KB3031432 and
fail - 14098 on 3075226, 3060716, 3071756, 3078601, 3109094, 3126587, 3146706, 3149090, 3161561, 3164035, 3185911 and 3917868
It seems like nothing actually got installed and the WIndows updater still does nothing. What is my next step? If there is a corruption in the downloads, should I try to download from work onto an external drive? Or does this all actually point to a Registry problem. The computer is clean of viruses and really rather lightly used (Dad is 85).
I would be grateful for any help. I have to leave the monitor on 24/7 or I might not get it back on at all. Is there any way to just force the usb-to-vga driver to install? That's all aI really need.
Allynn
