WSUS says "updates installed", but not really...

Postby kamild1996 » 21.09.2016, 03:55

Basically what happens. I generated an image with updates for Windows 7 x64. When I tried to install them on a test Windows 7 installation, it said something along the lines: "Installation completed successfully"
But after checking the list of updates, there are none that have been installed.

What could that be?
Also while we're at it - can I add my own updates (downloaded from Microsoft ofc) to the installer?

Could you monitor one reboot? Does it say something like "Failed to configure updates. Reverting changes" (free translation of the German message).

Yes, you can add updates to wsusou. Please take a look at .\doc\faq-enu.txt for a HowTo.

Nope. After the restart no such message appears, Windows just restarts as usual. But I think I found a clue, when I was trying to install a few updates manually.
Looks like whenever I try to install any update, the installation just hangs. It will stay that way unless I manually close the wusa.exe process and stop the wuauserv service (which, by the way, causes svchost to use up the entire first core). After doing that, I can successfully install a single update, but the problem repeats after trying to install another one. I'm experiencing this with Windows 7 installed on VirtualBox, but I had a very similar situation yesterday when I was installing Windows 7 on an actual notebook. Resetting Windows Update by following the guide at Microsoft's support page didn't help, neither did installing the "Convenience Rollup" update. Have you ever had this problem before, aker? It's driving me crazy...

Also I'll refer to the faq.enu-txt, thanks!

Installing KB3172605 and/or KB3185911 has helped many users getting updates MUCH faster. There are also Antivirus scanners that like to interfere.

I've been already searching for updates which could help with that, and as such I've gathered a collection:
  • KB3020369
  • KB3050265
  • KB3125574 (Convenience Rollup)
  • KB3153199
  • KB3172605
Looks like I do not have KB3185911 so I'm going to add it, thanks :)
About the first problem though - I think everything is fine as long as I do not start searching for updates right after booting into a fresh instance of Windows. This way I can install all the updates correctly without having to kill processes. WSUS Offline Update is working now :)
