ERROR 504: Gateway Timeout on .NET security updates

Haven't seen this one before, but then I have never selected to include C++ runtime .NET Frameworks until now. These two timeout and fail - kb3099869, kb2861697. Is this a windowsupdate.com issue?

Most likely. Had a few problems with the MS servers after the last Patchday. Please try again.
