WinVista error: Unsupported Operating System ( x86)

Hi,

I tried WSUS because Windows Update seems to be stuck in a Check for Updates loop, doing it for hours with no result. Additionally, though some updates were installed previously, Update insists the computer has never checked for updates before.

Downloaded the latest WSUS, ticked all needed boxes, ran update but got Unsupported Operating System ( x86) error.

I'm running Vista SP2 32bit on an old Toshiba, system restored in late May, latest update Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256

If relevant: tried to reset Windows Update components as shown here, got error while trying to run "net stop appidsvc", service seems to not be installed at all.

With WSUSOU, did you start a download run before trying to install?

The MS article is for many OS, for that reason not all steps will apply to you. Update showing that you never searched is the direct result of resetting the WU component.

Did start a download run twice, took about an hour each. Second try I changed the download directory but it still downloaded to the /client folder and deleted the new directory folder.

The 'never checked for updates' was there before I started doing anything; there's a whole list of installed updates when I click on that tab, all installed late May over a couple of days after system restore.

Wait, does wsusou report "Unsupported Operating System ( x86)" or something like "Unsupported Operating System (w60 x86)"?
