Has anyone else had issues updating fresh xp and vista installs ? Need some help and suggestions. I have the latest version ( and have tried older versions )... When I run the updater, it updates the service pack if need be, installs .net, IE, Media Player.... but after reboot and re-run the program it says nothing to do and does not install any of the security updates for xp or vista... I have looked and it has indeed downloaded the security updates, but something is not triggering them to install. I am in the process of trying out win 7 to see if it does the same thing as well. Ive tried on multiple machines with multiple installs and have had no success. I have a feeling its something small that im missing..... I am going to try and attach my screen shots of the program window so you can see the settings im using and the results. Any help would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks all !!

Please post the content of C:\Windows\wsusofflineupdate.log.

Try the following:
Run these commands from an administrative cmd:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits


Then delete the content of the folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" (just the content, not the folder itself).
Reinstall the Windows Update Agent using ".\client\wsus\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe".
Reboot and try again. (If you installed "Microsoft Update", you have to reinstall it)

If it does not help, please download the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser (MBSA) and run the following command from an administrative cmd:

"<path to mbsa>\mbsacli.exe" /xmlout /catalog "<path to wsusou>\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab" /unicode /nvc > "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.xml"


And post the content of the "result.xml" on your desktop.

Please delete "F:\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab" and (if verification is enabled) "F:\client\md\hashes-wsus.txt". Then restart download and retry installation.

Thanks !!!!!! It worked, but not untill I did something else. I was clicking the update generator and walking away from the machine and it wasnt until I sat here and watched it this morning that I knew what was happening. You were 100% correct on what to do with that file, however, each time id delete it and the other and re-download, it would crash stop right in the middle. I got fairly fast internet. I found out it was avast causing internet traffic to pause and sometimes stopped. I removed that and installed another anti-virus program and my web browsing quit crashing, gave the updater a try and bingo ! All because of an antivirus program..... !

You can try to exclude the wsusou-dir from the on-access-scanning.
It would be a good idea to disable the web protection for the domains listed here, if the download fails.
