[Resolved] Microsoft Security Essentials Grayed Out

Hi there,

I'm having trouble installing Microsoft Security Essentials. I've ticked the option to download Microsoft Security Essentials and the Defender definition and everything has downloaded successfully. Whenever I open the client application on a Windows Server 2008 R2 edition, it grays out the Microsoft Security Essentials option.

I tried editing the UpdateInstaller.ini file and set the MSSE option to Enabled, but that still did not resolve the problem.

Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this?

It seems to be a leftover from the initial MSSE versions as they did not officially support server OS.
This has changed since some releases but WOU was not adapted for it.

Hmm, leftover?
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=5201 says:
"Supported Operating System[s]: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP".

Oh I see. I never actually knew that Microsoft Security Essentials won't work on a Windows Server 2008 environment. I knew it was supported for Windows 7, which made me think that it would be for a Server environment as well. Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks again though. I love your application!

Kind Regards,
M

Yes, leftover.
When they removed the personal-use-only restriction they also lifted the ban on server OS (if this was ever implemented). At least it installs and runs without problem in S2k3 (x86/x64) but I can't confirm for newer server OS.
Threadstarter should try a manual install.

Yes, MSSE on Server 2003/Windows XP 64 bit SP2 runs well. From what I know, it should now run everywhere.

Well, I don't want to be blamed for problems with MSE installations on Server OSs.
In my opinion, "installable" does not mean the same as "supported", and Microsoft's statement is clear enough in the article mentioned above, so I say: Whoever wants to install MSE on Server OSs - go ahead!
Additionally: Whereever MSE is installed, it'll be updated regarding signatures by WOU.
Hope you understand my point of view.
