IE 11 not being installed on target pc. Why ?

IE 11 not being installed on target pc. Why ?

Postby JustRay » 22.03.2016, 14:47

Hello everyone.

I am running WSUS 10.6 on a Windows 7 Pro X64 machine.
And I pretty new to very helpful utility.

I have read many of the postings in this forum and have learned quite a bit.

Currently, I'm trying to understand the conditions under which "UpdateInstaller.exe" will install "IE 11" on a target pc.

Here's two examples:

One:
I start off with a virgin Win 7 X64 pc that, by default, has IE version 8 installed on it.

I start "UpdateInstaller.exe" and click on the "OK" button on the bottom of the "IE11" dialog.

And sure enough, when the update has completed, "IE11" has indeed been installed.

Two:
Now I move on to pc number 2.

It starts out as a Windows 7 Pro X64 machine.
Then, I update "IE 8" to "IE 9". (I ran the MS offline\standalone install for "IE 9" on the target pc.

I then start "UpdateInstaller.exe" and click on the "OK" button on the bottom of the "IE11" dialog.

But this time, "IE 11" is not installed on the target pc.
All the other updates are installed but IE 9 remains.

I'm puzzled.
Can I ask for some help and an explanation, as to when IE 11 will and wont get installed from more experienced users ?

Thanks

Hello Ray (it's Ray, isn't it?),

Did you reboot between those two steps?

Thanks for the quick reply.

It's Ray (Thanks for asking.)

Good idea.

I did.
I did reboot the pc.

After running the IE 9 standalone installer, I restarted the target pc.

Then, when I started IE 9 (after the install) and perform a "Help", it showed version 9.
And when I went in search of some IE 9 components that should be present after the install, I found them.
So, methinks the IE 9 upgrade completed successfully.

Hmmmm.
I wonder what I doing incorrectly.

I just downloaded 10.6.1 and am running the Updategenerator as I write this.

I'll update this thread with my results after I run the new Updateinstaller.

Did you run UpdateInstaller twice (with a reboot between run 1 and 2)?
wsusou needs to install some prerequisites before being able to install IE10/11.

Your both geniuses !

I finally "get" it now.

I did see yesterday, as you pointed out, entries on the screen showing that during the first run of the Installer, IE10/11 pre-reqs were installed.
But it never occurred to me, that I needed to run the installer a second time. (Until now.)

Once I did that, IE 11 was installed.

I can't thank the both of you enough for putting up with me.

I tried 10.6.1.
And it automatically restarts the target pc after the pre-reqs are installed and then starts the IE 11 install.
A good thing.

On my target pc, 10.6, does restart the pc for some things, but not for the IE 11 install. (Even though I chose the Automatic reboot and recall option.)
Thanks to the both of you, I now know that I need to run the installer a second time.

You folks are the greatest.
