Which updates are downloaded

How does WSUS know from which date to download the updates for the selected OS? Or does it just download everything and when you install the PC knows which ones to take?

Wer Rechtschreibfehler findet, darf sie behalten oder an den Meistbietenden versteigern. / Everybody finding a misspelling is allowed to keep or sell it.
