I just tried again to reproduce this error on an XP SP3 enu + Office 2003 enu VM, but I failed (it worked):

message posted above, I copied the whole CD content to the Desktop and started the updating procedure from there, but it still worked.
So I've still no idea what's going wrong on your machine(s), and as long as I don't understand it, I can't do worthwhile modifications to the code, of course.
