All updates or just selected installed ?

All updates or just selected installed ?

Postby web5 » 08.08.2019, 15:02

Hi,
did practical test/run of wsus:

0. clean win8.1 in virtualbox
1. did wsus download updates [ c++ was checked]
2. then did auto-update with all the files from 'client' folder
and then when all done
3. check for updates in win8.1 and
shows allow of important and optional updates from 2014 to 2019

, and have some questions:

- does 'wsus' installs only some updates or
how to download/install complete set of updates with wsus
without need to update the rest via MS update ?

You can find answers to your questions in older threads. Nevertheless I'll answer them anyway. WSU Offline (UpdateGenerator) always downloads all (available) updates for the selected Windows/Office version. It (UpdateInstaller) installs only missing updates on respective clients. Most important thing is that WSUS Offline only manages updates which are marked as security-relevant by MS, everything beyond that is up to the user. Meaning the user can decide to either ignore the rest of the updates or install them via Windows Update (or both, i.e. install only some updates).

You can't. MS does not offer any list nor catalog WOU could use for obtaining the update URLs.

The only way would be getting the update URLs manually from the MS Update Catalog website and defining them as static entries. See included FAQ.
Microsoft update catalog: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/
Windows Install media download: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media

I thought that WSUS exactly for that one thing -
to gather all updates available.

I know how to download single one update.

Anyway i like WSUS installer that does reboots - nice.

wsusou was written in the times of Windows 2000 and XP, when you needed to install between 80 and 300 updates to habe all security updates installed.
And that‘s what it still does. It determines all required updates for the local computer and installs them.
You will have a repo of updates (it contains all security-relevant updates, which aren‘t superseded; not all updates), which is able to update a computer to the most recent version (just security relevant updates) and does not depend on the current update state.

It's not a big deal, but i was expecting:

- getting all old to newest and
- once installed, that day Windows Update will show no updates required to install.

Another issue:
- how to add manually downloaded updates
to the list of UpdateInstaller.?

There is no list UpdateInstaller uses.
It hands the catalog file wsusscn2.cab to the Windows Update Agent and installs, what WUA reports as missing.
For manually adding updates to download / installation, please see .\doc\faq-enu.txt
