Read errors

Postby cdgoldin » 02.04.2018, 06:54

With the latest two versions (11.2 and 11.2.1), WSUSOffline is returning "read error (unknown error) in the headers" on almost every download!

Hi cdgoldin,

could you provide an excerpt of your download.log here? I don't know that error, so the context could give additional hints.

Greetings

There is nothing in the download log in respect to this error message, just in the console log. After virtually every wget (?) operation, it displays the aforementioned error message, and then retries. Often the retry displays the same message, and I've seen as many six retries before it apparently succeeds. I never saw this message before version 11.2, but that may be coincidence. I've also experienced difficulties with WU for W7, so perhaps the MS servers are having problems?

With version 11.2 wget was updated to version 1.19.4. Maybe you've stumbled over a problem here.

Maybe you could extract version 11.1.1 into an alternative directory for testing and see if this error is still there. If download works, update the test directory with 11.2.1 and try again. If this works, too, you have a problem with your files in your regular wsusoffline branch (maybe problems while overwriting files during updating WSUS Offline Update).

I downloaded 11.1 into a new directory, and ran updategenerator.exe. It encountered the same error, so apparently it did NOT start with 11.2 as I thought. (It's hard to tell unless I'm watching the wget download when it occurs).

This time I captured part of the console log:

So, I'm guessing this has something to do with the MS Server, and not WSUSOffline?

Do you use a .wgetrc file for wget on your system that modifies the default parameters being used by wget?

Anyhow, as you already guessed, there may be network problems. However, they could also be on your system's side. Are there any firewalls inbetween? Do you use a proxy for internet access?

Assuming a "wtgetrc file" is something I would have to set up, I haven't done so, therefore I'm not using one. Standard Windows 10 Firewall and SPI Firewall (via the router). No proxy

My ISP made some equipment changes a few weeks ago (around the time I first noticed this), and (as I mentioned above) W7 WU has experienced some problems "checking for updates" that disappear and reappear at random. So network problems seem to be the culprit.

It would appear that, after a few retries, wget is successful, so the problem is not unsurmountable.
