.NET Framework 4.7 LP installation issues

.NET Framework 4.7 LP installation issues

Postby random » 22.10.2017, 23:16

Hi,

For some reason, I cannot install the .NET Framework 4.7 Language Pack without rebooting the system first. Actually, this is the first time I have this kind of problem.

The system in question is a 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro with Update 3 (non-ENU) freshly installed on a VM.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install a non-ENU 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro with Update 3 (November Rollup 2014);
2) In WSUS Offline Update, just tick "Install .NET Framework 4.7"; *
3) Hit the Start button.

* I tried using the command line to install the .Net manually, but the results are the same.

I wonder if there is a way of forcing a system restart after finishing installing the .NET Framework 4.7 and then resume the installation from that point?

Medium supports Microsoft Windows (w63 x64 glb).

EDIT: I have just tested using a 32-bit Windows version and the same thing happens.

What happens when you double-click on NDP47-KB3186497-x86-x64-AllOS-PTB.exe? Which error do you get? According to the .NET deployment guide error 5100 means
5100 The user's computer does not meet system requirements.
I wonder how that can be with a .NET language pack when .NET framework has been installed correctly ...

Bellow I describe the steps I take in order to install the .Net Framework manually. On a fresh install of 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro with Update 3 (using an untouched MSDN ISO image):

Take a look at the registry value Version / Release (the same in both keys) prior to installing anything:

Image

Then I successfully install the .Net Framework (NDP47-KB3186497-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe). I didn't reboot the machine.

Image

Note that the registry value did not change. This behavior doesn't occur on Windows 7.

Now I try to install the Language Pack (NDP47-KB3186497-x86-x64-AllOS-PTB.exe):

Image

It says that the .NET Framework 4.7 (pt-BR) requires the .NET Framework 4.7 to be installed first.

EDIT: If I reboot the machine then the LP can be installed without any hassle.

Any clues?

regards,

OK, that's good to know. Now what happens when you install .NET framework without any command line switches? Is the installation still successful?

Yes, the installation completes normally. I just have to accept the reboot request so I can install the Language Pack afterwards.

For the time being, I suggest that a reboot be considered after installing the .NET Framework on a non-English OS.

Thank you.

Just happens on some machines. Fresh setup or did you install some drivers before running wsusou?

Hi aker,

aker wrote:Just happens on some machines. Fresh setup or did you install some drivers before running wsusou?

Your hint on the drivers was of some help. I didn't need to reboot the machine to install the Language Pack, but only if:

a) the machine didn't have any drivers installed (namely, VMware Tools);
b) the .NET Framework was the first software package to be installed. I cannot select Silverlight for installation since it has precedence over the .NET Framework installation.

I think that a reboot request would be great right after the installation of the .NET Framework in case a Language Pack is available. That's a suggestion.

Thank you.

Which product and version of VMWare and the VMWare Tools do you use?
Then we'll try to find a way to identify the machines requiring a reboot and handle the reboot properly.

VMware Workstation 14.0.0
VMware Tools 10.1.15.6627299

I don't recall correctly, but I think this problem occurred only with this release of Windows...

Do you think it's got to do with the virtualized environment?

As far as I know, some builds of the VMWare tools depend on C++ and .NET, so some .NET components may require a reboot until the get installed/updated. This would explain, why the new version is displayed AFTER a reboot, but not BEFORE.

At the moment I'm setting up a Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64 (RTM, untouched TechNet ISO) virtual machine using VMWare Player 14.0.0 and VMWare Tools 10.1.15.6211.

[EDIT]
The easiest way I found, was to to query the Version/Release registry key after the NDP-setup completed.

This could possibly allow installation of missing dotNET language packages on a computer, where a new Windows LP was added, too [by detecting the LP's version independently from .NET 4.x main].
