End of Support for Vista

End of Support for Vista

Postby lmacri » 29.06.2017, 04:36

The change log for v10.9.2 at http://download.wsusoffline.net/ notes that "This version will be the last one supporting Windows Vista".

Even though extended support for this OS ended on 11-Apr-2017 there are still many Vista SP2 users who are just discovering that their automatic Windows Updates have not been running to completion for several months. I've been posting in the MS Answers forum that Vista SP2 users should use WSUS Offline Update if they are still unable to get Windows Update to run to completion after installing Dalai's suggested speed up patches at http://wu.krelay.de/en/, but it sounds like I'll have to stop recommending this tool once v10.9.3 is released.

Will users who are currently missing security updates for Vista SP2 / IE9 released prior to the end of extended support (e.g., users performing a clean reinstall of Vista SP2) be able to download v10.9.2 tool from the archive and patch their system up to April 2017 once v10.9.3 is released?

If options for Vista SP2 are removed from the Legacy Products tab of the interface, will Vista SP2 users still be able to use the next WSUS Offline Update v10.9.3 release to update other supported Microsoft products like MS Office 2010?

I would suggest you, to create an ISO with the last supported version of wsusou and save that file.
MS will remove links from the catalog and take down files, so a support of outdated systems will run into problems this or that way.

I noticed that a new extended support released (ESR) v9.2.2 was released today (03-Jul-2017) for older platforms like Win XP and Vista. The change log at http://download.wsusoffline.net/ states "Don't use one of the deprecated platforms for downloading. Use a supported platform instead", so does that mean that this ESR version is only intended for updating unsupported Win XP and Vista clients from a remote server, or can home users also run this ESR version of the tool from their Vista SP2 machine as well?

It should probably read "Download under Win7 or newer" to ensure all download components and programs do work as intended".

Just to clarify. Are you saying that a Vista SP2 home user with a clean reinstall of their OS (and no access to another computer) cannot use the new ESR v9.9.2 to patch their system, even though the change log at http://download.wsusoffline.net/ states that "This is an extended support release for older platforms (Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista and 8)"? Or is this just a warning that the ESR v9.2.2 might not work as intended when run on a Vista SP2 machine?

If Vista SP2 users cannot use the new ESR v9.2.2, then back to my original question. Can Vista SP2 users still download and use v10.9.2 (rel 19-Mar-2017) from the archive? The change log states "This version will be the last one supporting Windows Vista". It appears that v10.9.2 does not include the June 2017 updates released for older platforms to patch the vulnerabilities listed in Microsoft's security advisory 4025685 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -platforms) that were added to the new ESR v9.2.2 (rel 03-Jul-2017), so if the ESR v9.2.2 actually runs on a Vista SP2 machine it would be the better choice.

I've encountered a few Vista SP2 users who claim that Dalai's recommended speed up patches at http://wu.krelay.de/en/Vista don't fix their "Checking for updates..." hangs and slow Windows Updates, and I'd like to know if I can still recommend the archived v10.9.2 and/or the new ESR v9.9.2 of WSUS Offline Update as an alternative method to update their system.

Installation should always work, it's just the download part that may not work correctly on wxp and Vista machines as some external tools may have already dropped (or will drop in the future) compatibility to these OS.

The download part should work on Vista. It should even work on XP when sigcheck.exe is replaced with an older version (2.30). Probably best to just give it a try, and look for any errors during the process or in the download.log.

About my recommended list not fixing the issue: That's probably because I don't include any Office updates in my list, like Volume Z does on the VistaX64 forum thread. I understand that it's a difficult situation for Vista users, because everyone drops support for it while the search issue is not solved. But that's how it is.

Guys, stop using unsupported OSs without buying a custom service agreement. If you can spare the $200 per pc per month ($400 for WinXP) that's fine but otherwise WOU will just download the patches that were published until the end of support. You will not get any new ones!

WOU still works for all Windows versions. Even Win2000 Patches are still online on Microsoft's download servers. Doesn't mean you will get any new updates.

If you really want to have a Crypto Trojan destroy all your precious files you can continue using Windows Vista. Otherwise please update to Windows 7 or Windows 10.

Evereyone recommending WOU to people still using Windows Vista doesn't have a clue and should please be silent!

Besides: Vista was a shitty OS anyway. Who want's to use it longer that they have to? Except the customers relying on CSA support of course.....
