download failures

download failures

Postby kelpguy » 31.05.2017, 06:55

hello everyone.
i'm not a technician but i attempt to fix my computer problems myself with the help of the i'net.
apologies if this has been covered already but i couldn't find anything on the forum.

i recently reformatted a laptop and need to update it but going the normal slow microsoft update method would be too costly (using my data allowance) so i thot i'd try WSUS but i'm not having a lot of success.

so far, i've tried 3 times to download the WSUS updates and all 3 attempts had a large number of ''failures.''
i had 69 failures in my last attempt.

here's a sample:
05/20/2017 4:37:31.03 - Warning: Download of http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdow ... 398218.cab failed

the failures in my 2nd attempt are at the beginning of the download and
the failures in my 3rd/last download attempt are at the end of the download..

can i transfer updates from one download to another to make one complete download file?

or... since the failures in my 3rd attempt are near the end of the updates, can still run the installation and at least get the successful updates installed?

or can i simply run the update installer in the 2nd and 3rd downloads with the failures until all the MS updates are installed?

suggestions, please.

thanks...

First: You can download on any machine you want to, it is not required to do so on the target machine.
Second: If some download failes, just retry using the same copy of wsusou as long as required to get all files. wsusou will just download missing/broken files.

I'm not sure, if UpdateInstaller will work, it depends on which files failed to download. It looks like failed dynamic updates, so it will most likely work but not completely update your computer.

hi Aker... i really appreciate the support and the speedy reply to my message.

thanks, i was aware of that feature from watching WSUS videos on youtube.

>Second: If some download fails, just retry using the same copy of wsusou as long as required to get all files. wsusou will just download missing/broken files.

OK... i just ran the download 7 times and still have the same/identical ''failures.'' there's 58 failed files, all in a group

i'm a little shy of that cuz i ran the download with ''warnings'' once and i lost my personal settings and some of my files. i was able to do a system restore and that fixed it but i was a tad nervous about it.

do you still feel i can install the updates?

thanks Aker...

I would at least try. Else: post the content of .\log\download.log here.
To do so:
- delete the log file
- rerun UpdateGenerator
- wait for it to finish
- open the log
- create a reply here, which looks like this:
<content of download.log here
Can you download the CABs from that failed group manually? There is no error code in your OP, unfortunately.

If you have IPv6 connectivity, note that I experienced problems on MS servers with IPv6 access. I got several "Bad Gateway" errors with IPv6, and had to restrict wget to IPv4-only.
