Installer hangs at Listing ids of missing updates...

After a clean install of Windows Vista + SP2 I could not install any updates. Followed several troubleshooting methods without success. Then I found WSUSOFFLINE and eventually created a USB file of the missing updates. I thought the update install was hanging as it was listing id's of missing updates, but then watched the utube of Eli and realised my patience need to be for many, many, many hours. Not being a very patient person I cancelled the updating. I wondered if I could speed up the process. Found in Task Manager that the syshost process was hogging the cpu when nothing else was happening. Found http://wu.krelay.de/en/ and downloaded the three files for Windows Vista 32bit x86. Before installing I stopped auto windows update in the control panel, rebooted, then installed each download in date order with a reboot after each one. I had previously created a USB file of the missing updates. Before running the install I ran the IObit - Advanced System Care utility and defragged the drive with IObit - Smart Defrag. I then ran the wsusoffline update usb file and the listing ID time was much shorter and proceeded to install the missing 175 updates. Started auto updates in the control panel and ran search for updates and shortly was notified that a further 38 updates were available! After installing and a reboot the Windows Update stated no further updates available! Many thanks to WSUSOFFLINE, KRELAY, and ELI on Utube.

Re: Download error message

I have had similar problems with Windows 7 Home Premium, during the install portion, on multiple machines in the past month. Perhaps this will help.

It seemed to me that the update portion of WSUSOFFLINE was hanging because Microsoft Windows Update Service (wuaserv) was "interfering" with the process. When the update hangs, go to the Services menu (right click on Computer icon, select Manage, select Services and Applications, select Services, select Windows Update (under the Name column). Right click, select Properties, select STOP. Set the Startup type to Disabled and click on the OK box.

The process that was hanging should restart shortly, and continue to completion. Repeat as needed every-time it hangs! I find that using the Automatic Reboot and recall option during the UpdateInstaller portion seems to flow a bit better.

Stuck on 'making a list of updates'

Postby timgowen » 11.01.2017, 17:31

I'm using this utility because a new laptop refuses to run Windows (7) update. The utility downloaded some updates and even installed some Office 2010 updates, but when it comes to installing the others it is stuck on 'Making a list of updates (be patient, this can take time)'.

This seems like the same problem that the regular Windows update has... it never gets as far as listing the updates required for installation.

Anyone got any ideas? Can I install the downloaded ones manually from the download directory?

@timgowen:
What does C:\Windows\wsusofflineupdate.log say about the version of Windows Update Agent? Did WSUS Offline install KB3172605 successfully? Did you set Windows Update to "Never check for updates"?

I am really getting desperate. I downloaded and installed the suggested downloads (one considering IE was not compatible though) deactivated update search, firewall and anti virus and still wait for 2 hours on the exact same point (listing ids...)
as I saw in the log the KB3172605 has been succesfully installed
what else can I try?
does it have to do with the absecne of IE (I think it 's deactivated)
all that on Win7 sp1
at first I let it for almost 12 hours and nothing happened
now after all these steps and 2 hours still in the same spot :(

Did you reboot after setting it to "Never search"?

yes i followed the instructions step by step
what I eventually did and somehow wwokred (I don't know if i missed smth) is that I stopped the procedure and then runned the remove wsusadmin script in order to stop it since it never moved on.
as soon as i Logged i n windows properly i clicked to search for updates and it didn't looped
I then shut down the pc and it installed 141 updates
today I cliked to search for updates and it found some and again it didn't loop
all that without having completed the wsusoff procedure
so it did somehow worked and installed some updates that were enough for the windows to stop looping?

Looks like the new WUClient finally applied.

Don't try to understand it, it's Microsoft, after all.
