Checking for Updates / Wrong KB issue

To Dalai:

It is very difficult to contact you via other forums (mostly in German?) and so I have to inform you here by English. Although this is not related to the topic, I find no other possible way to contact you. I hope you can have some comments or reminders about using Microsoft's Security Bulletin as it may have some errors. Well, I have to say that I have 3 Windows systems PCs, namely, XP, Vista and 10. Certainly, there is no problem with Windows 10 as it automatically updates itself. For Vista (SP2, 32-bit version), I have to use "Windows Update" to update it. However, the message "checking for updates" seems go on for hours as "Windows Update" is run. Therefore, I come across your web page "Search for Windows Updates takes forever - A possible solution" (http://wu.krelay.de/en/) and find Microsoft's Security Bulletin link which redirects me to its web page. I soon find at least 2 bugs in the traditional Chinese version of Security Bulletins: MS16-132 table "Vista Service Pack 2 (3203859)" is linked to KB3198195 which is not found in MS Update Catalog. The second bug is in the Security Bulletin MS16-135 table: "Vista Service Pack 2 (3198234)" is linked to KB3193418 which seems not update the system correctly to reduce the time the message "checking for updates" appears. Instead, KB3198234 seems capable of reducing the waiting time to 20 minutes or so. Even though your "Search for Windows Updates takes forever - A possible solution" page has included the KB3198234 and KB3203859 updates, any PC users updating via Microsoft's Security Bulletins should be reminded of checking the relevant numbers.

BTW, as Microsoft has stopped supporting XP, how to update, at least for security, XP system ?

@Mods:
You're free to move this post (and the one from ckl28) to a new thread.

@ckl28:

I think private message in this forum would have worked, but I'm not sure.

You're right, there are errors in the Security Bulletins, which MS apparently haven't even cared about fixing. BTW, the links have been wrong in the English Security Bulletin as well since November Patchday. That's why I included the (correct) download links in my site. There's nothing I can really do about MS's mistakes. All I could do is add a note to my site to verify the KB numbers, or rather using the download links on my site instead of those in the Security Bulletins. [EDIT] Done, added a note. Let's hope they don't do it again in future Patchdays... [/EDIT]

BTW, as Microsoft has stopped supporting XP, how to update, at least for security, XP system ?

You could use the POS Ready trick, but you're on your own since MS neither supports nor recommends this switch on regular XP systems. It might even screw up your system.

Thanks for your help, Dalai. It is glad to see your note in your web page. And it is impossible for me, a newly registered person of this forum, to post a new topic nor a private message to any user.

I did tell Microsoft about the bugs in the Security Bulletins several days ago and wait to see any corrections in their pages. BTW, "POS ready" trick for updating XP system is very new to me. Would you explain more about it ?

POSReady hack is a simple Registry change. However, it is permanent and cannot be easily removed once applied.

Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

You're probably right. I remember that the first couple of posts were moderated, but I don't know whether or not new members can write PNs (I didn't try it). Anyway, all is well now, I guess :).

Well, I guess - or at least hope - that MS received some reports about these errors on their pages... All we can do now is wait.

In addition to what boco already said, there's quite a lot of stuff on the internet about this trick: search for "xp pos ready" and you'll get a lot of results explaining the "hack", the pros and cons and so on. I've never tried/used the "hack" myself (despite still being on XP), so I don't have any first-hand experience I could share. However, this trick was on some news sites (heise.de IIRC) and there were discussions of people using the "hack" - most of them (if not all) without any issues so far. But that doesn't mean it stays that way, and since MS doesn't support it, they could "end" it anytime.

According to your name color, you received "the power". No need to ask a mod from now on.

Yes, thanks. I was already wondering why I saw the option to edit the posts of other users, which I knew wasn't there before, so I made a guess in that direction. Just a note: I've never been a mod anywhere so far - it's going to need some getting used to.

No problem, it's relatively quiet. Disapproving a few spam posts and banning the bots. Approving the rest. You'll get the hang of it, quickly. Compared to my mod job over at FileZilla's, this is like a walk in the park. ;)

By the way, you'll now have access to the extra Mod subforum, where the time problem was already discussed earlier. Should there be any dumb questions, the public won't see them, there. :roll:
