Installer hangs KB3172605-x64.msu

Postby brnrds » 29.08.2016, 10:28

Hello I'm new here.

Having issues with updates on W7 64 b and Office 2010.
I tried to update my laptop, it found some 90 updates, but after clicking to download nothing happens, endless wasting time and CPU.
So I tried the WSUSoffline generator.
On one PC that worked out well and it's updating normal again.

But my laptop hangs at the KB3172605
This update will never get through.
I have installed the latest Updatemanager but no result.

Is there a way to ignore that particular update?
Just like uncheck in the update list of Windows.

I deleted the updatefile but the WSUSinstaller crashed on errors.

Having the EXACT same problem on Win 7 x64 Home Premium.
Tried a reboot w/o success.

*Edit*
Managed to get this particular update installed by disable windows update to "Do not search for updates" in Controlpanel followed by a reboot as described in another post here http://forums.wsusoffline.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5818

After WSUSoffline installed this optional update, Bluetooth stopped working.

Is there a way to blacklist it?

Well, I found a solution for a freshly installed W7SP1 machine, which doesn't work with the June/July 2016 rollup installed by WSOU.

KB3102810 contains a WUA Client 7.6.7601.19046, which actually works there and search is reasonable fast (5 minutes for the first search, few seconds for subsequent ones). All later WUA clients the except the one from the June/July 2016 Rollup are broken and go into 100 % CPU load mode. The problem with installing that KB3102810 hotfix is that it gets superseded by all the other monthly WUA updates, which usually also got installed by WSOU. So it can't be applied to an existing machine without further measures. I'm exploring now, if uninstalling all previous (WUA) hotfixes works there.

Unlike the KB3172605 rollup the KB3102810 hotfix doesn't need any prerequisites, I just installed it alone onto a vanilla W7SP1 machine without any updates installed, where WU has never been used and got all security updates within a few minutes.

Was successful on existing installations:

1. Made a backup of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to not lose Update History.
2. Uninstalled all previously installed Windows Update Client hotfixes (simply uninstalled all non-security hotfixes post-2014, which were mostly installed by recent versions WSUSOU) including KB3102810 (which I installed myself previously trying to fix WU, but was superseded anyway).
3. Got rid of Microsoft Update by removing the checkbox from WU settings (I don't need it anyway).
4. Verified that Windows Update Client was reset to version 7.6.7600.320 from 2014 by checking wuauclt.exe file properties.
5. Installed KB3102810.
6. Restored C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution from backup to get Update History back.
7. Ran another Windows Update search on the existing installations, which took about 1-7 hours depending on machine specs.
8. Be cautious and review all "Important Updates" before installing anything, because it wants to install some of broken Windows Update Client versions again.

All further Windows Update searches now take from about 5 minutes on a Atom N270 machine to below 1 minute on modern Skylake machine without the KB3172605 rollup, instead of 10+ hours of 100 % CPU load every day. That's good enough. I'm now looking into how to prevent WSOU from installing any non-security hotfixes. I don't want them.

You may create a file ...\exclude\custom\ExcludeListForce-all.txt, which prevents wsusou from downloading the updates listed inside.
But be warned, this may break the installation of security-relevant updates.

Just a note: AFAIK MS does not officially support Skylake on w61. They announced, that updates won't be tested on Skylake anymore very soon.

I know that MS broke their end of the deal and the new monthly "convenience rollups" most likely won't install there. I will not install them anyway.

Read post by "Joe" and found that I had tracked a parallel course. On two pcs, the installation of KB3172605 did the trick and new updates are fast. I carefully vet all updates and only install those that are germane to system security. One update had to do with Egypt scrapping daylight savings time?? My profound thanks to Torsten for making the updater available. Donations via PayPal?

Just to clarify:

Just installing KB3102810 on a new Win7 installation without any updates does the trick and is the only hotfix you need there (while KB3172605 has a lot of prerequisites and is quite problematic by itself).

So Install Windows 7 SP1, install KB3102810 an press "Check for Updates" in the Control Panel and within minutes you have the entire update list.

Once you fixed Windows Update this way, you can't run Automatic Updates (or just press "Install everything"). You have deselect non-security updates, because these break the update search again. This will happen until MS publishes KB3161647 to Windows Update. Currently it will still install a broken version as "important update" and overwrite the bugfix mentioned before.

tl;dr The problem is solved since October 2015 and June 2016, but Microsoft decided to not publish the fix to Windows Update, instead it still installs a broken version from March 2016.

I'm here to say a million thank you's to Joe. Holy hell I've been losing my mind for the last few day.

I've tried almost every damn fixit Microsoft has put out, every troubleshooting app. Nothing. Even the wsus program didn't want to work because of that stupid broken file MS pushed. Just bought the computer used, came with a fresh install up to SP1 and for the life of me could not get updates to work. I was ready to box it up and ship it back.

Now to add to what you had said, I've found a second update file that stalls the update process and its KB2670838. Via process of elimination, if that one gets install it will hang the update and sit there forever and a day "looking" for new updates.

If you go to Installed Updates, sort by name and look for Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2670838) right click, uninstall, reboot, then run your updates again it will work. Until it installs it again. But hey you have updates.

Again thank you Joe!
