Add .msu updates

Add .msu updates

Postby WarlordBlade » 28.06.2012, 19:21

Can an option be added to WSUS Offline Update to download .msu updates instead of the .cab version? For my purposes, the software I use (RT Se7en Lite, http://www.rt7lite.com/) to integrate updates ONLY accepts .msu format. There are no software that downloads .msu updates right now, only .cab. There are also no converters that change the .cab updates into the .msu version.

NOTE: The .msu update version contains the .cab version inside of it already, it just needs to be extracted by using a command line, http://www.windowswiki.info/2009/02/19/how-to-extract-msumspmsiexe-files-on-the-command-line/

This not possible because the Microsoft catalog file WSUS uses for determining update URLs does not contain the MSUs.

If you want to, you can add msu Updates to your client Directory.
WSUSOU will install them, when needed.
But as boco Said, Microsofts catalog file does not include them, so the Dynamic Determination of updates wont find them.

Will the links to the .msu update version be included eventually or not?

Unfortunately, other integrating software natively support .cab updates but I their ease-of-use (interface and customization) is low, there are much more bugs in it and features I need are not there compared to the software I am currently using (it seems this software's developers have abandoned the project so there may not be any support for .cab updates at all in the future).

Currently I have to manually download the .msu version from Microsoft Microsoft Download Center, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/default.aspx one at a time, it is very tedious and time consuming. This is and has always been (about a year, every two months, I re-download the updates to integrate into OS) my only way to to obtain the .msu updates I require.

I really was hoping that a tool would have emerged by now to automate downloading .msu updates from Microsoft's servers for me but it seems it will not happen.

The catalog file is created by Microsoft. Unless they decide to put the MSUs in it, there's nothing we can do. There's no way to automatically collect the MSU URLs at this time.

See it this way: MSUs are stanalone update packages, and the MS catalog is meant for WSUS servers. Entirely different usage concepts.
