Unfinished installation of the updates

Unfinished installation of the updates

Postby radeo » 16.07.2019, 10:58

Hi everyone.

Yesterday I tried WSUS. The download of updates for Windows 8.1 went fine with UpdateGenerator, but when I ran UpdateInstaller, one didn’t finish installation in normal time.

The first update already (KB3000850) lasted for 7 hours (!) (screenshot) and still didn’t finish the installation. After seven hours I closed the console. Although the file size seems like 711 MB, I suppose 7 hours is too long.

What do you recommend? Maybe this big file could be skipped? Or should I try again and wait?

Also, since I closed the console after seven hours, the monitor dims after 1 minute. Is there any way to change this back to normal?

I suppose it's a "normal" time frame when KB3000850 (November 2014 Rollup) is missing. Well, as normal as it can be with Windows Update anyway . You can avoid that long waiting time when you use a Win8.1 setup DVD that already contains this update. You can get one e.g. at TechBench (yes, it's original MS DVD).

I recommend that you reinstall the system with an ISO that contains the November 2014 Rollup (like the one mentioned above), assuming that you just installed the system and you didn't put too much work into it so far.

Also, since I closed the console after seven hours, the monitor dims after 1 minute. Is there any way to change this back to normal?

Just switch the power profile back to the previous one (and delete the WSUS Offline temporary profile).

Hi Dalai. And thank you for all the info.

That sounds like a good idea, but I already have a system which includes lots of other software and tools, all backed as an image. So at this view, no fresh install of the system is wished. How about one of these options:

a) How about excluding this KB3000850 update within WSUS and later manually installing the file, would that change something?
b) Would hypothetical not installing this KB3000850 still be OK for the Windows 8.1 (security and functionality)?
c) Do you have some better idea?

I see. Does this mean you didn't install updates in the past?

a) How about excluding this KB3000850 update within WSUS and later manually installing the file, would that change something?

No, it probably wouldn't. Besides, it can't be excluded because the script itself checks if it's missing, i.e. it's not defined in some static definition file.

b) Would hypothetical not installing this KB3000850 still be OK for the Windows 8.1 (security and functionality)?

There's a reason why WSUS Offline checks for the presence of this update and installs it when missing, as well as why Microsoft included it in the ISOs releases sometime after November 2014: It's required to install further updates.

c) Do you have some better idea?

Please post the contents of C:\Windows\wsusofflineupdate.log (in [code]-tags). I want to see if the other prerequisite updates KB3173424 and KB3172614 have been installed properly. These updates are required to reduce the installation time of updates significantly.

Or, you can repeat the download with WSUS Offline 11.7.4 (published a couple of hours ago) which changes one of these prerequisites (KB3173424 replaced by KB4504418), to see if this changes anything.

Yes, exactly. The usual way of updating via Control Panel worked and now suddenly the system (Windows) loads and searches the updates to the infinity and not finding anything.

Oo, yes, right. That makes sense.

OK, I can do that in any case.

Uh, this issue exists since more than 3 years, for Win7 and 8.1 (and XP also had it previously)! See my site. However, it's solved since mid 2016.

Well if excluding this KB3000850 in the WSUS would install (almost) all the other updates and later I could manually install the KB3000850, that could be one option.

Yeah, but that's not how it works. The newer updates are not offered until KB3000850 is installed. Same thing with Windows 8.0 which won't be offered any updates anymore unless it's been updated to 8.1.

Here is one (not seeing any KB's you mentioned):

It looks like WSUS Offline first installs KB3000850 before the other prerequisite updates are installed (and the regular updates come after that).

According to the log, WSUS Offline doesn't disable Windows Update before installing the 2014 Rollups. Please try what I described on my web site (just disable Windows Update and reboot the system, don't install anything), then try WSUS Offline again. I hope that it works then. If not, all you can do is wait for the installation to finish.

Or if you are a little known to command line, install it using DISM, which bypasses WUA.

[edit]
Open an administrative command prompt and enter these commands (the last one will reboot the computer):
Code: Select all
cd /d "<your wsusou dir>\client\w63\glb"

expand ".\Windows8.1-KB3000850-x86.msu" /f:"Windows8.1-KB3000850-x86.cab" "%temp%"
dism /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3000850-x86.cab"
del "%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3000850-x86.cab"

expand ".\Windows8.1-KB3003057-x86.msu" /f:"Windows8.1-KB3003057-x86.cab" "%temp%"
dism /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3003057-x86.cab"
del "%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3003057-x86.cab"

expand ".\Windows8.1-KB3014442-x86.msu" /f:"Windows8.1-KB3014442-x86.cab" "%temp%"
dism /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3014442-x86.cab"
del "%temp%\Windows8.1-KB3014442-x86.cab"

shutdown /r /f /t 00

I managed the updates with Windows Update Troubleshooter which fixed the infinite searching/unfinding the updates. However, for couple of months already, under the same hardware configuration and the same image file that contains the Windows system, the Troubleshooter didn't fixed the way to get the updates. Fully and genuine licensed operating system can't be updated. That is a little bit "funny".

This worked fine, thank you. Everything lasted about 6 hours with couple of reboots. However, looking at the log file, these KB's were warned as not found:

These KB's look like are for my Microsoft Office 2007 and .NET. Any ideas how to get them anyway?

Thank you. I think I could manage with the CMD commands. As it looks like the above updates worked, so for now, thank you for wanting to assist.

Sounds good so far. Is KB3000850 installed now?

radeo wrote:These KB's look like are for my Microsoft Office 2007 and .NET. Any ideas how to get them anyway?

Select the checkbox to include .NET Framework in UpdateGenerator and do a new download run. For Office 2007 you must use an older version of WSUS Offline (in a separate directory) because it's out of support since 2017; the last version to support Office 2007 is 11.0.3. Note that the downloads for unsupported software might not all be available anymore.

Yes, KB3000850 was installed as a first one in like 20 minutes or less. All went fine.

OK, thank you very much for everything. And I did found a 11.0.3. version in the archive.

As an interesting thing, now I ran Windows Update in Control Panel and whala, 106 updates are avaliable to download. There are:
- some updates that were already downloaded today via WSUS,
- some updates that weren't downloaded today by WSUS,
- some of those "not found" for Microsoft Office 2007.

Any new suggestions maybe?
