1) Failed means failed. Something went wrong. You coule post the log here, so we can take a look at it.
2) The two updates are the 01-2018 updates for Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2. As they are superseded at least 3 times, they won't be downloaded, as long as you didn't add them to the static links.
3) Everything inside the custom-folders stays untouched on self-updates. So there is no need to worry about.
