WSUS does not recognise WIN_8

I use WSUS 1x/month. When I launched WSUS today it told me there as an update, which I duly accepted to be installed - version 11.1.
I then launched the UpdateGenerator. I noticed that, after downloading the Windows Updates, WSUS seemed to continue with the installation, even though I had not launched UpdateInstaller.

When I subsequently tried to launch the installer a message appeared on my screen:
wsus.png
(5.86 KiB) Not downloaded yet
.
I have not changed anything to my set-up, so I don't understand this. Please advise.

Windows 8.0 has been out of support for quite a while, by Microsoft as well as WSUS Offline. You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free through Windows Update (or using an Win8.1 ISO), and should do so to be able to get Windows updates.

Thanks for your quick reply Dalai. I am on Win 8.1/64-bit, so I do not understand the message box I get.

Did you accidentally apply some compatibility settings to UpdateGenerator/UpdateInstaller? Please check that in the EXE's properties.

I did not change anything there. Besides, when I check the properties of both exe's there is nothing about compatibility like there is with exe's of some other apps.

Did you launch UpdateGenerator/-Installer from a program running in compatibility mode? Such settings are inherited to child processes.

To make things a little bit easier: Download Process Hacker (portable), extract it to some location and launch it. Then start WSUS Offline (UpdateInstaller.exe). In Process Hacker, find UpdateInstaller.exe process and double-click on it. In the newly opened properties window switch to "Environment" tab and check if you find the variable __COMPAT_LAYER there. If so, it certainly runs in compatibility mode.
