Util finds no updates for October 2017

Util finds no updates for October 2017

Postby huertgenwald » 08.10.2017, 13:56

On Oct 6th MS shipped their October patches.

The old version 11.0.1 and the new version 11.0.2 fail to find a new version of the file "wsusscn2.cab". The used version is from Sep 12, 18:52:14.
Hence the util assumes there are no new MS patches to download and it only cares for virusdefs and runtime-files, if those were checked in the UI.

I don't know if the author downloads an outdated version of "wsusscn2.cab" or if MS failed to update the file on their servers.
Please look into the issue since your util is, due to the above mentioned problem, sadly useless right now, AFAIKS.

PS: My test tries were made for W7 X64 SP1 and W10 X64 15063.632 and the September version (.608?)

Thx for your work on this great util !

October 6th, 2017 was a Friday!
The offical 'MS-patchday' will be the second Tuesday every month (next time October 10th, 2017 19:00 UTC+2).

At the moment MS delivers the following:
Code: Select all
D:\>wget -N --spider http://download.windowsupdate.com/microsoftupdate/v6/wsusscan/wsusscn2.cab
Spider mode enabled. Check if remote file exists.
--2017-10-08 15:50:47--  http://download.windowsupdate.com/microsoftupdate/v6/wsusscan/wsusscn2.cab
Resolving download.windowsupdate.com (download.windowsupdate.com)... 13.107.4.50, 2a01:111:2003::50
Connecting to download.windowsupdate.com (download.windowsupdate.com)|13.107.4.50|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 243558022 (232M) [application/vnd.ms-cab-compressed]
Remote file exists.

So everything with WSUSOU seems to be OK!

Also, the update history for Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 does not yet list any new updates for this month:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... te-history

This will change in two days from now; but so far, everything is as expected.

There was an update on Friday (in Germany), for me at least

Quote From my update app in W10:

"2017-09 Kumulatives Update für Windows 10 Version 1703 für x64-basierte Systeme (KB4040724)" => Update to version 15063.632, Date 6.10.2017

Installed on "live" meaning real computer and a W10 copy in a virtual machine.

According to MS this update was posted on September 25 ?? but didn't register in my update app until Oct 6 ?!

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -kb4040724

Since my last run of WSUS Offline was on September 13, at least this patch should have been downloaded ??

After searching the internet it seems, that the Sept 25 patch was a bugfix for the mid Sept standard patch, which caused responsiveness problems with the Edge browser.

I can agree to that since in mid sept edge was very sluggish on the very first browser launch after the regular patch was installed.
But after that edge responsed normally from then on.

So there's indeed no apparent wsus offline problem.

Besides the question why KB 4040724 was installed two weeks late ?? MS to blame ?

Thx ! to both mods for their answers.

Microsoft started a few month ago to distribute cumulative updates for W10 twice a month. WSUSOU only captures those that are actually fixing security issues because only those are included in wsusscn2.cab.
