Problems with login after update interrupted

Problems with login after update interrupted

Postby WallenderHolunder » 18.02.2017, 03:59

Hey all,

some days ago I started the download process of wsusoffline. This took very long, maybe because it was the first time I used this and since about 2 months I didn't use my Vista laptop, so no automatic update since the middle of novembre last year.

Also installing was veryyyyyy slooooow. (To give a number: since 11 hours I'm running a new search for updates, only vista, excluded Office, included C++ libraries and NET-Framework and service packs -- current step: "Determining superseded updates (please be patient, this will take...")

So, after like a half day of waiting without progress in installing the 3rd update package, I stopped the program for reboot and restart. But then the problem occured: I can't login to my non-root account ("Es konnte keine Verbindung mit dem Dienst "Benutzerprofildienst" hergestellt werden. Wenden Sie sich an ihren Systemadminstrator" - Maybe this in English: "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded")
So I tried logging into my admin account: No error message but I stuck somewhere in the middle.

So, what can I do? Should continue the process of compiling a new updateinstaller.exe and run another time? Or should I remove the interrupted update (is it even possible?)? If the last one: how do I do it?

download.log only has "Info" lines, no warnings.
install.log ... not within the wsus directory, but maybe somewhere else?

(I speak German, if you prefer to answer that way.)

Thanks for offering this tool and your help!

Fenster geschlossen? Reboot/hard Reboot?
Irgendwelche Konfigurationsmeldungen von Windows beim 1. BootUp nach den Abbruch?

Viele Grüße

No, there was no error message (see below), it just seemed to be stuck, so I closed the window and rebooted normally.

In the meantime I removed all later updates and only one can not be removed:

As it seems, I just have to remove this package somehow, and everything should be back to normal... I try the super safe mode now (without Network drivers and stuff) and give it another try for removing.

Thanks for the help!

1) I tried these commands

Code: Select all
net stop Wuauserv
attrib -r %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution /S /D
rd /s /Q %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
net start Wuauserv
shutdown -r

shown here: http://www.ghacks.net/2012/03/13/remove-corrupt-windows-updates-with-windows-update-regenerator/

That did not help.

2) Using Revo Uninstaller or Micr$oft Fix-It probably won't work, because some old files might need to be recovered, which were replaced with a newer version during the update. (In the ghacks linked forum, they also talk about ccleaner and tweakme) I try Revo Uninstaller, as it lists the update.

...nope, only a lot of registry keys that are offered to be removed.

3)I found out, that the update probably changes the msiexec.exe, Msiexec problems? Tried http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_repair_msi_(windows_installer).html
Code: Select all
sc config msiserver start= demand
Net stop msiserver
MSIExec /unregister
MSIExec /regserver
regsvr32.exe /s %windir%system32msi.dll
Net start msiserver

... nope

4) Support.microsoft.com says to reinstall the update might help: https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/help/2438651/how-to-troubleshoot-windows-installer-errors So I try this Hotfix here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2890375/fix-stat-or-wstat-function-fails-together-with-enoent-error-when-a-directory-symbolic-link-path-is-passed-to-it-in-a-visual-c-2010-application

... nope, can't be installed (repaired / removed), even not in Safe mode with only Command line after login (the one with GUI in the background)

5) Msiexec.exe is offered here for download http://whitelist.kaspersky.com/advisor#search/msiexec.exe copy an old version might help, but which?

Sorry for the late reply, had to do too much things...

I personally don't think, that this is related to the updates or wsusou. Sounds more like a general proble with Windows. Corrupted system file or something like that.

Are you able to grab the EventLogs? (stored at "%SystemRoot%\system32\winevt\logs")
WARNING: They might contain sensitive data such as installed programs, running processes/drivers, names, and (if there is some poorly written software) data, which should be encrypted. BE SURE TO CHECK THEM BEFORE POSTING/LINKING THEM HERE.

Also please test, if you are able to get C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log & all files inside C:\Windows\Logs\CBS & C:\Windows\Logs\DISM (if exists).

NEVER replace Windows system files, if you are not 1000% sure, that the version will work.
It sounds like, Windows is able to boot into Safe Mode, correct?
Then run
Code: Select all
sfc /scannow

in an admin cmd from there. This should fix damaged system files.
You may also try to create another user.

I just want to share, that after long time I solved the biggest part of the problem (by ignoring a long time, having the luxurious situation of a spare computer and) by deinstalling a random different update.

"Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 redistributable <something>" but not the newest as I tried before. Now I can login again into the non-root user and only one small problem remained: I can't gain adminstrator rights by typing the password, because no dialogue opens up, when I run a process/change a setting/etc. which needs these root rights. So, I need to switch to the privileged account.

yeah, but it's ok. Never touch a running system, especially when touching before caused catastrophic results... 8-)
