Hello,
I've tried as suggested.
Script ended with error
ListMissingUpdateIds.vbs(65, 3) (null): The system cannot find the file specified.

FYI --> using the same WS 2012 R2 installation media I created a pair of VM's (Datacenter and Standard) and was able to update both using 10.9.1 with an internet connection and the box checked to verify the installation packages. This was with VirtualBox whereas back in our Lab we have Hyper-V going... Am going to convert the VHDX file in the Lab to a VHD and see if I can update it out here under VirtualBox.

Sounds like some damaged system file. Crash happens, when starting the update searcher process.
Could you check using

in an admin command prompt?
Else, please collect and create a WindowsUpdate.log (see C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log for a howto).

Mine has different hashes. Maybe wsusscn2.cab got corrupted. Please delete .\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab and start a new download run.

Could you right-click(Properties) and check if it is signed by MS (two times) and the signature is valid? If yes, try to open it using 7-Zip or some kind of packer supporting CAB.
