I'm seeing the same behavior with Windows 8.1 x64 (which I believe uses the same updates as W2012R2). I actually experience this on 3 machines. One of these is virtual and is not typically used (serves as a template).
All three machines fail in the same manner. During the execution of UpdateInstaller, I see the following error:

I have run sfc /scannow and it did not resolved the issue.
