[solved] Updates for Windows XP apparently didn't install

Postby dagar7 » 14.10.2010, 00:08

Using version 6.6.3, I created an ISO (The ISO size was 1,399,684 KB) for Windows XP and burned the image to a DVD using Imgburn, which appeared to go well except for a couple of updates it didn't download. Ran the DVD on a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with SP 3 and it seemed to install properly, but only took about 5 minutes. However, on restart of the computer and going to Windows Update site, none of the Windows XP updates were found and the Update Site downloaded and installed all 117 updates. This was my first try with wsusoffline, so I need some help to find out what went wrong. Thanks for helping.

Hi and welcome, dagar7,

please provide %SystemRoot%\wsusofflineupdate.log for analysis.

The log has two parts, a brief section for Windows XP with only 3 updates, and then a section for Office XP WSUS, which we had ran from a separate WSUS CD, after the Windows XP had completed and we had rebooted the computer.
When I tried to attach the log, I got a note saying "The extension log is not allowed", so I will copy and paste below:

Yes, it looks to me like you did start the update only once. But you are supposed to reboot and run it again if it tells you. In your case it installed IE8, after which a reboot is required, before further updates can be installed.

You should have got the line "Installation successful. Please reboot your system now and recall Update afterwards." in the command line window. I agree that the entry "Installation successful" into the log is misleading at that point. Should be more like "Installation successful, re-run after reboot required.".

Tl;dr: According to the log you didn't finish updating, only the part until the first forced reboot.
