[solved] gray checkboxes for UpdateInstaller

[solved] gray checkboxes for UpdateInstaller

Postby ostroffjh » 16.09.2010, 21:57

I know the faq includes:
Code: Select all
UpdateInstaller.exe: ausgegraute Auswahlfelder / greyed out check boxes
Entweder wurde das Programm nicht heruntergeladen oder das Programm (oder eine neuere Version) ist schon installiert.
The programm has not been downloaded or it is installed already (maybe in a more recent version).

but this isn't helping me. If I have not downloaded the program, how can I be running it, or is it some other program I haven't downloaded? Since neither UpdateGenerator nor UpdateInstaller are actually installed, how would it know it is already installed, and more important, how can I find any other copy?

At the moment, I am running UpdateGenerator on my Vista laptop (no errors, it seems to run fine) and they trying to run UpdateInstaller from the client subdirectory - on the same machine. It looks like it did install all the updates, but I still wonder why most of the checkboxes are grayed out.

Thanks for explaining what I'm not getting.

Some are greyed out because they don't apply to the system in question. One example is the IE7 checkbox: Vista already included IE7 from the start, so there's no sense to install it (hence the checkbox is grey).

Others (like the PowerShell2) are not available if you don't have the necessary prerequisites installed (.NET in this case).

Question: What checkboxes are you concerned about specially?

Perhaps the faq could be modified to state that boxes will be gray for items that are not applicable.

In my case, under Installation, only update terminal server client and install .net 4 are available. Shouldn't backup up existing system files always be available? I know the terminal services client is actually up to date but its box is available, why shouldn't the update media player box be available, or does it know there are no such updates available? (The four boxes under Control are all available.)

Should there be a box for update Microsoft Security Essentials, or is that considered too critical to provide a choice? (It does get installed for me.)

I suppose I should file a wishlist request that the update show a summary dialog (not just the log file) listing just what updates actually were installed, and whether a reboot is required (assuming the user did not check automatic reboot.

Thanks for helping me understand. (I'm really more of a Linux user, but will soon be helping a local group update a bunch of laptops, which is why I'm trying to get a good handle on this update process.)

You have a choice for for XP and below. But Vista and 7 always backup, thus the checkbox is ticked, but greyed out. Vista+ simply does not allow to skip backup.
