Okay, so another 4 systems came along, and I thought I'd try it again.

I updated the directory of available updates, updated my thumbdrives with the new folder, and popped into a fresh install of Win7 SP1.

And it's working!

Went through the initial group of .NET 4.6 and Silverlight and the others, then rebooted and started working on the first group of 141 updates.

So it looks like maybe it was just more Microsoft corruption, but at this point, I'm happier.

Thanks - will update when it gets through the next parts...

Well, I can say that the 141 updates were installed, but it still left 66+ updates still not installed (mostly of the "Update for Windows 7 for x64..." variety).

Is there a checkbox on the downloader/installer to get those to be recognized, downloaded and installed? The are listed in the "important/critical" WU list.

Thanks.

thanks - I had seen that previously, and figured it was related to that, but as I'm not a WU or WSUS guru, I figured I'd make my observations known just in case.

Re: "general" updates not getting applied

following up on this (I never heard back what MSBA meant...)...

I thought I had read/someone had responded that WUO only does the "important" updates or just the "critical" updates - could someone clarify that?

I'm asking for a couple reasons.

My interest in using WUO is mainly two-fold - stability and simplicity (which, surprisingly, MS is not able to provide :)

Simplicity - I have to update many different machines/many different OS's. Right now, I have one machine that does the WUO downloading for 3 different OS's, and keeps them in separate folders. I copy those folders to 3 different thumbdrives, and I update the folders/thumbdrives periodically. Then I just run the WUO installer from the thumbdrives as needed on machines being cleaned/rebuilt - voila! Quickly, safely, successfully updated machines, without a bunch of management on my part.

Stability - I'm finding that, after, for example, a fresh rebuild and a run of WUO, installing more than 2-3 updates through Windows Update will lead to some form of system corruption that requires the system to boot into recovery mode, and the machine has to be restored to a previous point (clearly, it depends on the actual updates, but...). This is HIGHLY annoying, and getting more frequent, and is what got me started looking for an alternative in the first place.

Currently, when I rebuild a machine with Win7SP1 from DVD, then pop in the appropriate thumbdrive after the initial install, it'll install IE11, .NET 4.6, then it'll go through and install about 140+ updates, rebooting as needed throughout the process. And it will complete successfully (or at least without making me do any system restores!).

However, I then have to switch to Windows Update, and as of today, there are still 67 updates (some .NET 4.6, some "Updates for Windows 7", a couple User- and Kernel- updates, a Malicious Software tool update, and a couple "Security Updates" (clearly my WUO thumbdrive is a little dated). Oh, and some optional updates like Skype and some device drivers.

The problem is that if I only try to install the 5 or so .NET updates, they say successful, but a restart yields some form of corruption that requires a system restore to recover from, and I'm back at starting over again, and can only guess at which of the few updates caused the problem. And doing them one-by-one will often yield non-crashing results (I've tried, very frustrating to not figure it out which one caused the error during bulk processing).

tl; dr; Why doesn't WUO offer to install the "non-critical" updates that Windows Update still says need to be applied, or give me the option to have them downloaded/installed if desired? Clearly it can handle installing 140+ updates without crashing the system - why not apply it's handiness/management to these other updates as well? An all-in-one updater (that works!) would be that much more of a product, in my opinion. I'm not saying WUO is bad (please don't think that) - just wondering why it didn't got the full distance (it might very well be there's a technical holdup, I don't know - that's why I'm asking :)

Thanks!

Really? Check this post.

Only security-critical ones. See this post.

Why doesn't WUO offer to install the "non-critical" updates that Windows Update still says need to be applied, or give me the option to have them downloaded/installed if desired?
Because Microsoft doesn't provide a public catalog of all updates. We only have the catalog WSUS uses, and that one only contains the security patches. There's always the manual way (going URL hunting), for update lists refer to this topic.

oops, sorry about the MBSA - I failed to scour page 2 of the thread!

and the rest of your explanation answers my questions, I think. I thought WUO was using the same database that Microsoft Update was using, and didn't realize that WSUS wasn't the same as Microsoft update.

Thanks!

Yep. Too bad there is no complete catalog.

You could use an update pack such as the one from Simplix, though.
