Re: Unable to update

Postby Denniss » 12.11.2013, 16:28

Something goes really wrong here. Major problem is the non-existance of the wxp folder but \cpp is also strange: it only contains two files which are not renamed the way they should be (they use standard M$ name instead of being renamed by WOU to vcredist2008_x86.exe).

Is your download system a standard Windows installation or has something been tuned/modified with tools like ntune?
What's your antivirus/Firewall? Does it block some parts of WOU?

Multiple files missing in \win\glb as well (DirectX, certificates, silverlight)

Thanks for your response. From what you are saying, it does rather look as if my Windows installation may be unusual in some way, so I'm setting out below as much information as I can about how it's been set up, in case this rings any bells as regards a malfunction in WSUS.

The Windows installation itself is completely standard, and it's not been tuned or modified in any way (other than in the normal course of events & as set out below)., I do not use antivirus, or the Windows firewall, and the 3rd party firewall that I do use was turned right off when I ran WSUS. I connect to the Internet via a straightforward firewall router. I do not use MS Office.

The installation is, perhaps, slightly unusual in the following respects:

1)I've uninstalled a lot of Windows stuff: ComPlus Applications, Messenger, microsoft frontpage, Movie Maker, MSN, MSN Gaming Zone, NetMeeting, Online Services, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, xerox. (I kept IE7 for web testing).
2)I use Take Command in place of the normal command interpreter (an old version - 8.02);
3)I have (almost) no applications installed, but use a *very* extensive range of portable applications instead, and as part of this the context menus have been heavily customised (mainly via Take Command scripts);
4)I have MS Virtual PC 2007 installed.
5)The only slightly unusual driver I have is Ftpuse from Ferro Software.
6)I've changed the location of some of the standard Windows folders via changes to HCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders & HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders, and also in a few cases by using Junctions.
7)My c: drive consists essentially of just the operating system (which includes SP3, .NET Framework 4 & - obviously - MS Virtual PC 2007). I took a copy of my c: drive, using Acronis, at a very early stage in my deployment of Windows, and restore this clean copy on a regular basis. This copy of Windows has been virus tested offline using Kaspersky - as has my applications software - so I'm as confident as I can be that everything is clean and stays clean. Regular restoration of XP from a clean back-up copy also helps to ensure that XP itself hasn't inadvertently got screwed up in some way.

On a very general point: I've used essentially the same configuration on several PC's, and in every case the installation has proved to be *extremely* stable (but there again we're talking about Windows XP, so that's not exactly a surprise!) Furthermore I've not detected any problems, in the way any other software is running, to suggest that there may be some essential weakness in the way I'm working.

Not sure if any of the above will be any help.

Yes, I'll try another computer. The trouble is that all my PC's are set up in exactly the same way, so I'm not hopeful that this will help. The other thing I'll try is to temporarily change the command processor to cmd.com, but I'm not too hopeful about this, either - I've *never* found any compatibility issues between cmd & tcmd.

It may well be early next week before I have time to do any of this.

Thanks again.

Problem solved, I'm glad to say.

I tried UpdateGenerator on another PC, and that didn't work - not really surprising, since all my PC's are set up the same way. So I found a spare PC and re-installed XP (did the minimum necessary to get it working) and UpdateGenerator worked fine.

UpdateInstaller *doesn't* work with “Take Command” (tcmd.exe) as the command interpreter, but *does* work when I use cmd.exe instead. [I now suspect that tcmd.exe may well be the problem with UpdateGenerator, too, but since I've now got it working on a spare PC, I'm happy to stick with that.]

WSUSOU is a great bit of software (a bit strange, but still great!), and now it's working for me, too, I'm very pleased, so thanks to everybody who helped put it together - and to the people who responded to my post.
