Clean up Target Directory?

Clean up Target Directory?

Postby darpa999 » 09.11.2012, 06:24

Hi,

I would like to know if I download all my updates onto a USB flash drive, what does the Clean up Target Directory mean?
Is it for saving disk space when checked?

Please explain.

Thanks in advance!!

It means that updates, which have been replaced by others, and other unneeded files will be deleted from your target directory. If you don't select this option wsusou will keep replaced files there, even id they're unneeded now.

So, if I dont want these updates to fill my USB drive up so quickly, then I would need to check that option?

I just do not want my USB drive to fill up so fast with these updates.

So what would be the best?? Should I check this option or not?

Thanks

Hi!

If you use the target directory for WOU only, you should check it.
If the target directory contains anything else, you should leave it unchecked, because "anything else" will be deleted.

What do you mean by "anything else"
Does that mean folders and files NOT related to WSUSoffline updates?

Ok... I have a USB flash drive and I created a folder called WSUS and when I download the updates, I always point the updates to be copied to the WSUS folder only.
Like this >>>> E:\WSUS

Should I uncheck it or check it if I want to save more disk space?

I have other folders on the USB drive which are NOT related to WSUSoffline. I created a separate folder on there called WSUS.

If there is something Else than wsusou in E:\WSUS, it will be deleted. I World suggest you to use this Folder only for wsusou and Check the Option.

Something Else Might be Other Updates you added or Files you put there.

Im beginning to understand more clearly now.

Please see the attached file. This is what my USB WSUS directory looks like.

So, If I want to avoid the USB disk drive to fill up with space when newer updates come out, should I check the option to Clean up Target Directory?

Thanks

There are just wsusou related files in the directory, so I would suggest to select the option and atart download to clean up this directory

Like this???

Please see attached again.

So this is the way it should be??

And would this prevent the USB disk space from filling up too fast when newer updates are downloaded when the Clean up Target Directory option is CHECKED?

When certain updates are superseded by newer ones (e. g. the IE cumulative one) then the old ones are deleted in the target directory. If it will prevent the USB from filling up too fast depends on MS. Anyway, having this option checked will prevent unnecessary, redundant files cluttering the target directory.

Short checklist:
Code: Select all
[√] I use the target directory only for WSUS
[√] I have that option checked
That will give you the best experience.
