The stuff in question (.NET Framework) is includeded statically because AFAIK it isn't included in the Windows Update catalog (wsusscn2.cab). There is no way that WOU could "update itself" because it can't know the new URLs. However, as I explained in another thread: WOU has an update feature that downloads updated static link lists from download.wsusoffline.net. But this requires that someone (i.e. the WOU author) to update these lists, which just takes time sometimes.
Or at the very least just skip the one single bad piece of info and run the rest of the script to completion while logging the error?
This would not be useful. Imagine someone downloading a fresh copy of WOU, extracting it, downloading all updates for some Windows version and wondering afterwards why .NET Framework (or any other package for that matter) doesn't get installed. What I'm trying to say is that UpdateInstaller depends on some of the parts downloaded by UpdateGenerator. Canceling the operation is the most reasonable behavior at this stage. However, the error message style could be improved, although I don't know how exactly it should look like. But hey, it's open source, so anyone can contribute
.
